Emma Mae [a.k.a. Black Sister's Revenge] (1976) is a brilliant film made by the late Jamaa Fanaka. Shot on location in Watts, California, and with a cast of mostly non-professional actors; this film is a great example of vivid and independent filmmaking in the 1970s.

reading a chapter of hartman’s wayward lives and it’s beautifully written with really generative insights and theoretical suppositions, but i’m like not really convinced by critical fabulation as a methodology here tbh

I wrote about Once Upon a Time in Harlem's striking reflection of cultural debate that today's social media era has made nearly impossible to replicate. My latest for @Salon: salon.com/2026/10/19/what-on…

tangential to this, an essay I’ve been wanting to revisit recently
i need to explore in greater depth the contemporary black “creative” culture. and i mean the conscious choice to name oneself a “creative” in its most general sense. that always accompanies some kind of ambiguous/arbitrary, yet dogmatic, link to “Culture”

Let’s see how many Black Studies PhDs they actually have at a conference about the future of Black Studies. And since I’m on fellowship at the Schomburg I’ll be sure to bring this up in person :)

In 1688 Barbados banned drums because the colonizers realized the enslaved were using drums to talk and organize, particularly in the 1675 Cuffee rebellion. This explains how they would have communicated quickly islabdwide
Rare 1967 footage showing how traditional drums in Ghana were used to send messages over short and long distances, and even perform traditional poetry.

You’re unlikely to see a better documentary this year
The best film of #Sundance2026 was shot in 1972. In “Once Upon a Time In Harlem,” the late documentarian William Greaves gathers Harlem Renaissance luminaries for an afternoon debate, preserving history as intimate memory. Invigorating cinema. observer.com/2026/01/sundanc…

Replying to @blaqueerflow
There is no such thing as Black socialism or Black Marxism. Those are the “isms” y’all adopt to be accepted by white people. The only “ism” that Black people know and navigate in the South is RACISM. That’s how we know you’re not US.
