Yet more great energy reporting in the WSJ, recommend folks to read Some quotes from realistic venture capital folks: - “Decarb is dead for now" - “Climate Week could basically be AI and data center week" Removal of subsides + the need to actually power growth exposed how fragile the entire ecosystem was. Carbon removal gets a lot of flak btw but it's too easy of a scapegoat, there are a lot more techs that have no path to viability that continue to receive a lot of funding
Climate-tech VCs don’t talk much about climate change these days. They are focused on AI and data centers. Who isn't? "Decarb is dead for now," is how @SophiePurdom put it. Is that antithetical to climate-tech's purpose? We discuss! wsj.com/pro/venture-capital/… via @WSJ

Ryan Breslow's @bolt is raising a bridge pay-to-play round to "clear legacy obligations." But the controversial founder refuses to give up. He is putting $5M of his own capital into a once high-flying unicorn. techcrunch.com/2026/08/31/ry…
Sources telling me @bolt employees have had their most recent paychecks clawed back from their bank accounts. Bolt is blaming 'tech glitch' at payroll processor, but speculation is Bolt can't even make payroll, per sources familiar w/situation.

I wrote about the SaaSpocalypse — why some software startups are reinventing themselves for AI, while others are shutting down & starting from scratch. As one founder put it: “You have to burn the ships and start from the ground up.” wsj.com/tech/ai/saas-softwar…

A few months back, we signed a term sheet with a London AI startup. Then one of the founders quit to join a big AI lab and the deal was dead before any money went out. "That was a big disappointment" is what I told @ychernova at the @WSJ. That's the printable version. I get it, I spent my career as a founder before I started writing checks and a much larger, very hot, tech co dangling life-changing money is hard to say no to, but this poaching of founding teams is happening at every stage. PitchBook counted 322 US AI startup acquisitions with undisclosed values last year, up from 181 the year before (undisclosed usually means "we wanted the team"). 2026 is running hotter. Venture only works if founders play the long game - this means a growing chunk of our @ZeroPrimeVC diligence is me sitting across from a founder trying to figure out if they'll still be at the wheel in year 3 when a lab comes calling. Their story ran this morning and the headline made me laugh: "VCs Are Asking Founders: Will You Quit on Me?" If you're a founder raising right now, expect a version of that question. If you're building AI infra and don't have to think before answering it, I'd love to speak with you. Worth a quick read. I'm the guy in the first paragraph who got left at the altar 🤓 wsj.com/pro/venture-capital/…

The best founders don't end up in New York by accident. They come because this is where the hardest problems, the biggest customers, and the highest stakes are. The city demands you build something real. I've always believed the best opportunities live between fields of expertise — not inside any single industry, but at the intersections. No city in the world has more intersections than New York. Finance and media. Healthcare and technology. The customers who need AI to actually work — banks, hospitals, newsrooms, asset managers — are all here, within a few miles of each other. AI adoption is accelerating faster than any cycle I've seen. Per @PitchBook, AI is now 65% of NYC venture deal value, up from 16% six years ago. Early-stage funding hit $8.9B in 2025, up 50% in a year. Active unicorns: 32 in 2019, 159 today. The infrastructure of a generational tech hub is being built in real time. We're still early. The biggest deals haven't happened. The companies that define applied AI haven't been built. The founders who build them will be ambitious. They'll want to be where the problems are. They'll be here. NY @Techweek_ starts today. Come build 🗽

Great mention of @ArrivedHomes in WSJ today, by @ychernova. wsj.com/articles/real-estate… “We think it’s healthier when homes are owned more directly by individuals even if they’re rentals, rather than being concentrated inside massive funds,” said Ryan Frazier (Arrived CEO)

Killer start to the @PrimaryVC’s NYC Summit! 🗽 Really loved the fireside with @linamkhan (fmr FTC Chair) & @bradleytusk on all things regulation & big tech. The moderator @ychernova asked very pointed & thoughtful questions… Lina was definitely in the hot seat!

Excited to see the Start Fund covered in the Wall Street Journal this morning. For half of the major cities in the world to have thriving venture capital ecosystems, there needs to be ~20,000 more VC firms worldwide, roughly three to four times the current number. There are great entrepreneurs everywhere. When venture capital ecosystems take hold in a city or country, this is when these entrepreneurs start building billion-dollar companies that disrupt incumbents and create modern offerings that make the world a better place. Here is the problem. Currently, between 400 and 550 new firms launch per year. Most of these are replacements for the firms that close down or go into zombie mode, so the annual VC growth rate is very low. We launch between 200 and 300 of these firms every year, including the first funds in many countries and regions. The number of new VC firms has been growing, and we have been growing, but not fast enough. We face real problems as humans living on this planet, and entrepreneurs play a major part in the solution. Yet, without funding, entrepreneurs working on meaningful challenges have little chance of scaling or succeeding at the level we need. So, at the beginning of 2025, we set out to make it dramatically easier to launch a venture capital fund. We were constantly told, "it's not possible", or "you can't do it this way," or "it's too risky for you." We powered through, anyway. We ended up taking a process that costs over $100,000 and takes over 6 months on average, and brought it down to free and less than one business day. We were able to lower the minimum fund size from $5 MM+ to $150K and the minimum investment from $100K+ to $10K. There was a lot of demand and excitement internally, but we had no idea what was coming. One of my team members mentioned this new Start Fund on LinkedIn, and the post went viral. I quickly followed, and that post went viral, as well. We have been inundated with demand ever since. There are literally thousands of people worldwide who want to launch a venture capital fund right now, many more than we ever suspected. And this is great, because we need them. We are working around the clock to launch Start Funds. I am personally pulling 18 to 20-hour days, 6 to 7 days per week, reviewing applicants, optimizing workflows, coordinating with team members, and streamlining systems. It's intense. Finally, we are starting to see a path for every major city worldwide to have a thriving venture capital ecosystem and for great entrepreneurs everywhere to get the funding that they need to make this world a better place.
