Mathematical vocabulalry may play a critical role in children's fraction skiills? See our new publication! sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Are young children’s brains already wired to understand fractions? See nice write-up of our recent article! waisman.wisc.edu/2025/08/08/…
Excited to share one of my PhD projects with @EdNeuroLab-the first neuroimaging study on fraction processing in children! Our findings showed that even 2nd graders, who haven't received formal fraction instruction, can process fraction magnitudes. dx.doi.org/10.1111/desc.7004…

I am so excited to announce that our first #fNIRS study of #math_cognition in #South_Africa is now out as a preprint: osf.io/preprints/osf/4su7j
It has been a great collaboration with Kathleen Fonseca, Parvin Nemati, @AliRahimpourJ, and @ElbieHenning
Finally it's out! Short‐term number sense training can recapitulate long‐term neurodevelopmental changes from childhood to adolescence. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Integrated number sense tutoring remediates aberrant neural representations in children with mathematical disabilities biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #biorxiv_neursci
Preregistered Preprint Alert! Math language matters for children’s fraction arithmetic ability, not analog representations of non-symbolic magnitudes! Feel so good that my covid-era study is finally out:) osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/65… @PercivalMatthe2

RCTs can play a role in building scientific knowledge and useful predictions but they can only do so as part of a cumulative program, combining with other methods, including conceptual and theoretical development, to discover not ‘what works’, but ‘why things work’.

What if you don’t model response times in fMRI models? Biased condition difference estimates and potential surprising fake group associations. Our paper has the details and fixes biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
TY! @russpoldrack @patrickgbissett @IndianaJonesSr @sunjae_shim @JaimeGotobed
Congrats Alex!! Knew it!!
I've just accepted a tenure-track faculty job starting August 2023 in Educational/Developmental Psychology @UWEauClaire!! I am so excited to get back to teaching and feel very grateful to be moving so close to family! 🧵1/x

Based on n = 536 (7.5-15 yo) we found brain-wide associations between arithmetic skills and GMV of perisylvian regions, suggesting a role for language processing in individual differences in arithmetic skills @DrJeromePrado .

So many cool people have been posting they are recruiting a grad student! Here's to getting over the imposter syndrome.
Are you interested in socialization, STEM education, culture & development, or informal learning?
I am accepting a graduate student to start Fall 2023 at @ucsc!
