Some personal news: I'm going to be leaving Vox after 12 years (!!) to start not one, but two new projects!
The details are still under wraps, but I can tell you that I'll still be writing about the crisis of democracy, the far-right, and liberalism's future. Watch this space!

There is nothing obvious about many Bennet, Eisenkott, Lapid and Yair Golan voters - incl survivors of October 7 - calling for them to work w Palestinian-majority parties. This could cement a seismic shift in Israeli politics, and it coming after 3 years of war is outstanding.
The Joint List supports the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel in accordance with international law, which is what Israel’s DC advocates long demanded. It’s quite telling that Satloff now calls this is “an alternative to the fundamental idea of the state.”
A little humility, please.
Choosing to govern with the support of #Israel's two #Arab parties may seem like a straightforward political calculus 6,000 miles away but let's not forget that the Joint List, by far the largest of the two, ran on a platform in which it described itself as "a genuine democratic alternative to the racist #Zionist consensus" -- meaning not just an alternative to @netanyahu but to the fundamental idea of the state.
The @gadi_eisenkot-led coalition may ultimately decide to rely on their votes to oust the current government but let's not insult people who have devoted their lives to protecting Israel to suggest this is an easy or simple decision. And if they decide against that path, they may have a very good reason.

"If you shoved a metal pipe down a dog’s throat and force fed it to such sickening extremes that its liver increased in size ten-fold, causing it great distress, obviously that would be monstrous. Foie gras is similarly cruel."
I'm weird: I stopped eating meat when I was in college because I lost a three-hour debate with my father, a professional philosopher who wrote about animals.
But the reason I lost that debate is because the arguments on the pro-animal torture side are bad! Totally indefensible
And I say "pro-animal torture" deliberately, because a lot of meat is produced in deliberately torturous conditions. While banning meat is unthinkable, banning intentional torture like foie gras is very much not benthams.substack.com/p/ban-…

None of this is true. The rage and narrative making on the right is getting to be a fascinating phenomenon we need to look at.
Netanyahu did much better than left-wing pollsters predicted (channel 12’s last poll gave his coalition 50), and much worse than right-wing polls expected. Filber’s last poll for channel 14 gave Netanyahu’s coalition 62 and Filber declared on Election Day that Lieberman was below the threshold.
So no, Netanyahu didn’t blow out the polls, he landed pretty much in between the politically identified pollsters.
Just because the left doesn’t give us honest competent polling doesn’t mean the right does.
But none of that is what this article is about. There is absolutely no way to crunch the numbers in which Netanyahu didn’t lose seats overall.
The fact that that simple numerical fact drives an insane amount of rage against anyone who mentions it online suggests that the right is exactly as trapped in its echo chambers and rabbit holes as the left.
Wow this is one of the most unbalanced articles I've ever seen from the FP. I am not at all a Bibi fan but there's no question the biggest story of this election was buried deeeep in. He BLEW OUT expectations based on the lefty polls. Like 2016 in America. Really unimpressed

WW2 is definitely more Centrist Dad coded than anything else. The History Channel is more powerful than groypers

The one important component you leave out is the opposition's majority in the Knesset, passing legislation that would make Netanyahu & the coalition's stability very difficult. Like a commission of inquiry into Oct 7, requirement for a doctor's assurance of health to become PM.

Every Israeli coalition scenario seems, at present, impossible:
1) The right-wing elements of opposition won't work with Arabs
2) Opposition won't sit in national unity with Bibi, and he controls Likud
3) Bibi *obviously* can't sit with Arabs
Unless one changes, new elections.

It's very early, so take all I say with appropriate caveats.
Netanyahu will claim victory because he's the largest faction. That is 100% spin.
Netanyahu's only achievement is being the largest faction. But according to all the exit polls, his coalition stands at 50, the opposition at 70. Netanyahu grew at the expense of his coalition partners.
Netanyahu will not be the next Prime Minister. The best he can hope for is to be an interim Prime Minister until the next government forms. Don't make light of that. It may entail a war with Iran.
It all depends on Eisenkot's ability to get Lieberman to support a coalition that relies on the tacit support of Raam and Mansour Abbas.
Racism has never exacted a price from anyone in Israel. Overcoming the racism towards the Palestinian citizens of Israel is an imperative if Israel is to liberate itself of the curse of Netanyahu.
Replying to @DanielSeidemann
no pressure, but a lot of us out here pushing refresh on your feed constantly right now to see what your first takes are….. 😳🫣😬
If Israel's current exit polls hold, the parties representing the Jewish center will have to make a choice: partner with Arab parties or else keep Bibi in power.
A pretty clear metaphor for the choice facing Israel more broadly.

The biggest party doesn’t matter: in 2009, Tzipi Livny had more seats and Bibi became prime minister. Bibi’s party now has more seats but he lost. Can the opposition capitalize on its win is an open question.
Israel: Don’t be fooled by the expected reporting of an “inconclusive”
result. If the last polls are close to final result, it would be a resounding repudiation of Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership.
From a coalition of, currently, 68/120, he’ll likely drop to well below 60, in
a country where shifts between blocs are very rare, comparatively. People belong to political camps by virtue of religiosity, family tradition, demographic
background, and longstanding ideological beliefs – like in many countries but even more so.
It would not yet mean his replacement, however… Unless the Eisenkot camp gets 61 without support from “Arab”parties, we’re in for a long night/month or two.

In the Channel 13 exit poll, Likud received 25 seats in the Knesset, while Eisenkot’s Yashar has 23, while his bloc had 53 seats and the bloc supporting Netanyahu had 50. Record 17 seats for Arab parties.
On Channel 12, Likud received 24 seats and Yashar had 22, while Eisenkot’s bloc reached 52 seats while Netanyahu’s got 50. Record 18 seats for Arab parties.
Hendel and Winter didn’t pass the threshold which came to about 188k votes.

Half-way through Election Day and turnout is highest in over 50 years. In part driven by the Arab vote. If this continues until 2200 the Netanyahu bloc will shrink further and the hard-right Amcha Yisrael party increasingly unlikely to cross the electoral threshold. OTOH also the Eisenkot bloc will be smaller and the only option for them to form a government will be some kind of deal with the Arab parties.
