1/ 🌍 Building the future we actually want to accelerate toward.
Last week I spoke at @balajis’ Network State Conference, sharing what we’re building in Switzerland- a permanent village and accelerator for decentralized, open-source, and d/acc technology.

prolly a good time to announce that my next academic article is on Lazarus Group. where we introduce the 'Threat Layer' as a kind of dark analogue to the Social Layer. i expect published by end of year:
I think the post will age poorly, but at the present moment it does appear to be a fairly accurate summary. 😒
Proposing @VitalikButerin and @Pontifex as a fireside for next d/acc event.
Potentially the dynamic duo this timeline needs.
The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

"From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."
Might actually be one of the most evil quotes we've ever heard. Like actually bone-chillingly evil.
Crypto has a reputation for being all about money. And looking at my feed lately, it's getting harder and harder to disagree.
Weren't we supposed to be building decentralised solutions that give power back to people?
We're in a very US-heavy space, yet I barely see serious conversations about the erosion of democracy under Trump, the upcoming midterms, or what's happening in Brazil, Georgia, Israel. Or even the recent victory of the student-led movement in Serbia, the protests against the rising cost of living happening around the world. Never mind the longer-term consequences of all this.
It feels like people avoid political, cultural and sociological discussions at all costs. But shouldn't we be doing the exact opposite?
This isn't about left versus right, or allegiance to any political ideology. This is about centralisation versus decentralisation. About who controls our money, our data, our tools, and ultimately our lives.
Meanwhile, democratic institutions are losing legitimacy, authoritarianism is on the rise, economic systems are under strain, and communities are increasingly fragmented. 74% of the world's population now lives under autocratic regimes.
At the same time, we're becoming increasingly dependent on social media and AI tools controlled by a handful of global players, collecting unprecedented amounts of data about our lives, while data breaches expose more of it at a scale and speed that's hard to comprehend. Power is becoming more concentrated, while people are losing control over their own lives.
And yet, somehow, the conversation keeps coming back to money.
We set out to beat the system at its own game.
Instead, we got seduced by it.
Our movement got hijacked.
Greed is real.
I find that genuinely depressing and infuriating.
Call me naive, but I'm still here for building. For building parallel institutions and solutions that are open, censorship-resistant, and difficult to capture.
I'd love to see more conversations about what we're building, why it matters, and the problems we're trying to solve, rather than how much money we can make from it. I personally want to commit to that.
Who is leading the way here?
Who is still building today?
Where is the hope?
It feels like we‘re soon going to reach a point where the only people with significant ETH holdings are elite hackers and scammers.
Which is some funky outcome, making Ethereum a Darwinian hacker network where only the best can retain their holdings.
🤔
Seriously f'ed up if true, but would explain the number of hacks people experienced on telegram recently.
someone can hack your phone by sending you a telegram sticker and you don’t even have to open it
a security researcher just showed that telegram’s animated stickers have a zero-click vulnerability rated 9.8 out of 10, that’s almost as critical as it gets
you receive the sticker, telegram automatically processes it to show you a preview, and that’s it.
code runs on your phone, no tap needed, no link clicked, nothing
the worst part? telegram is saying the bug doesn’t exist. they claim their servers validate every sticker so this is “technically impossible.”
meanwhile the researcher presented proof at a security conference in tokyo and the flawed code is still live in the app
there’s no patch. the vulnerability was reported months ago and telegram hasn’t fixed it
go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Messages and restrict who can message you. right now that’s the only thing between you and a sticker that owns your phone
the app 300 million crypto users trust with their group chats doesn’t even acknowledge the door is open

Ok so this is the best sales pitch for SF I’ve seen so far.
San Francisco's latest walking tour takes people past cats in windows, and apparently, the demand is enormous.
Nearly 100 people gathered Saturday for a neighborhood “catwalk,” a free afternoon stroll past the homes of local cats, all volunteered by their owners for a moment in the spotlight. The cats, by all accounts booked and busy, had become local celebrities without lifting a paw.
Organizer Lora Lafon told SFGATE the idea began with a Reddit thread inspired by a similar event in Minneapolis. More than 50 households across San Francisco signed up, and interest quickly outgrew what a single afternoon could accommodate.
The inaugural walk was capped at 100 people, leaving another 406 on the waitlist and 388 more expressing interest.
“We're such a big dog city (love dogs too) that it's been really sweet to see how proud the cat owners are when people stop to admire their babies in the window,” Lafon said.
Fortunately for the city's aspiring cat admirers, more walks are in the works, both in San Francisco and potentially across the Bay Area.
I’m usually an exceptionally optimistic person, which makes it all the more scary that I think @lunardragon420 is more right here than wrong.
Build the trenches.
Crypto has two years before the US government will hunt us down, target us, jail us and even kill us. Before the evil eye turns its cold gaze towards the people building a free anonymous p2p future.
Why?
The global order is disintegrating. The US people will see a drop in their living standard. This will breed resentment and radicalization in politics. Crypto will become the easiest scapegoat for the incoming democrat government in two years. There will be intense lawfare the likes we have never seen before. This will radicalize crypto and be the start of a new crypto wars which we will win.
Change is not gradual but sudden. Things compound & accelerate.
Lenin said there are decades where weeks happens, and weeks when decades happen. We are entering an inflection point when the political, economic, and technological order will change faster and faster.
The next two years will define the future of anonymity, free speech and sovereignty.

The US offers security to rich arab oil states in exchange for them backing the US dollar. This arrangement is called the petrodollar system. It is why the dollar is the most powerful currency in the world.
The Iran war has been a disaster for the US. It has been unable to protect its bases and is forced to move out of the middle east. It is locked in an unwinnable conflict. The US cannot guarantee protection for its arab friends. This will severely harm the petrodollar system. These costs won't be passed onto elites but to common working people in the US.
Saudi, Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi are forming a confederation to guarantee their own security - a signal of the failing US led order. Their plans include extensive transport and energy networks which bypass and sideline Israel. Israel which is a western colony in the middle east has become a pariah state even by formerly close US allies. Saudi asked the US for help with the Houthis in Yemen but the US refused.
Since the US is unable to guarantee security, China will fill the vacuum. China is friends with Iran and can get security guarantees from Iran.
At home, the economic consequences of declining American influence will not be distributed equally. The costs of geopolitical upheaval and economic restructuring will fall on ordinary people. Political priorities will shift to economic insecurity, inequality, and the environment. The tech elite might retain substantial resources and influence, but the broader population will face a difficult economy.
These pressures will breed resentment and radicalize US politics with economically populist democrats like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez coming to power in the 2028 elections likely winning the presidency.
Crypto will be the easiest and most convenient scapegoat for populist democrat rhetoric. Key core issues will be economy and environment. Crypto is unpopular with a perception of being linked to fraud, extraction, tax avoidance, speculation and Trump. All easy targets for populist democrat politicians seeking power.
The existing lawfare operation against cypherpunk agorists will intensify to levels we have never seen before.
I have been targeted by this. Deported from 2 countries this year, detained by police and questioned in 4 other countries and taken to a room by a police squad asked to sign a document without being able to talk with my lawyer. I'm not unique either. The most radical in crypto suddenly find themselves "under investigation" or charged with money laundering: @raythewarchief @rogerkver @rstormsf
And this lawfare won't be limited to just cypherpunks and cryptobros but more widely directed against rich tech elites. For this reason they have been investing in network states - making deals with foreign governments to have their own enclaves to operate from. The risk from western states is simply becoming too great and they are diversifying out of the US in anticipation of a regulatory & legal war.

I felt quite emotional when @julianzawist confirmed @GolemFoundation would contribute 50 ETH towards Roman Storm's defense two weeks ago.
I'm a cybersecurity graduate. I've studied tech and cybersecurity policies and used to regularly review them too. They suck. Tech laws are so fckn outdated. They are nowhere near close to keeping up with new tech and any innovations in tech either. When the Aaron Swartz trial was happening, it shook me so much. It's still a case I remember and feel sad about. Esp when I see AI companies using and abusing shit he was prosecuted and punished for all those years back.
This trial means a lot. The implications after this ruling will affect ALL of us. Devs or not. It will change what's okay to build. We shouldn't have to compromise on innovation just because law and policy makers can't keep up. Writing code should not be a crime. Writing open-source code should not be a crime. Contributing and donating or investing to open-source should NOT be a crime ffs.
Please consider contributing to @rstormsf's case. Every bit counts. He still needs $1.5M.

The PHP2Shell vulnerability is one of the biggest of all time, in terms of severity (it's a full RCE) and prevalence. PHP is probably the most distributed server side technologies. Wordpress alone is like 40% of all websites.
Log4Shell in 2022 is probably the closest to this one. That was a CVSS 10.0 and was a flaw in a widely distributed Java library. It was used by the Iranians to infiltrate US federal agencies to install Monero miners on their machines and harvest credentials.
PHP2Shell is going to be interesting because it's one of the biggest we've had in the open source AI era. Normally, you get a bit of time, from patch to active exploit distributing amongst black hats. At 2pm UTC today the patch for PHP2Shell will be released and it will likely be minutes before viable exploits are produced. And you won't need to be a nation state threat actor to utilise it. It could be anyone with a prompt.
So, not only will we find more of these deep critical bugs in core infra. The blast radius is going to be far higher, and the time to respond far lower. Since this is a deep server side vuln, I wouldn't be surprised to see a big jump it botnet activity as people capture vulnerable machines all over the place.
It's going to be an interesting few days in cybersecurity.
Could be really interesting for @ethereum folk and others fighting against surveillance, censorship etc.

And my best angels and mentors almost always came through stuff I wrote, talks I did or x spaces.
