Natalie Winters' reporting is plugging a lot of holes in the Democracy Files from a different direction.
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: European Parliament money helped fund a CLOSED-DOOR meeting on resistance to Trump and MAGA ahead of America’s midterms.
The keynote speaker? A University of Georgia professor who had publicly argued that Democratic victories could “make Trump a much weaker president for the rest of his second term.”
The June 3 meeting examined where Democratic Party, activist and NGO resistance was working—and how European progressives could learn from it and strengthen transatlantic cooperation.
The agenda spells it out:
“CLOSED DOOR ROUNDTABLE.”
“financial support of the European Parliament.”
European Parliament Vice-President Katarina Barley convened it. The Foundation for European Progressive Studies and Germany’s Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung organized it.
Professor Cas Mudde delivered the keynote, according to the organizers’ recap.

Oct. 30 · 4 days to Election Day
We hold the Senate 53-47. Democrats need to flip 4 seats. Senate ad spending, Oct. 12–25, as reported by the Wesleyan Media Project (AdImpact data) 👇
• OHIO: $111M. 59% of it benefited the GOP candidate.
• TEXAS: $89M. About two-thirds of it was pro-GOP.
• MICHIGAN: $66M, up from $50M.
• IOWA: $65M, up from $42M.
• KANSAS: $34M, up from $12M.
• NEBRASKA: $23M, up from $11M.
• SOUTH CAROLINA: $20M, up from $7M.
⚠️ 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘
• The Wesleyan Media Project says the Senate battleground has been "moving away from bluer states like Georgia and North Carolina and into redder territory."
• About 58% of the Kansas spending and 59% of the Iowa spending favored the Democrat.
🔥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗣𝗨𝗦𝗛
• EARLY VOTE SURGE: Compared with this point in 2022, early voting is up 83% in South Carolina, 50% in Texas, and more than 30% in Maine, Michigan, North Carolina and Kansas, as reported by AP.
• TEXAS: VP Vance rallied about 3,000 in Weatherford for Paxton and said that if Texas doesn't vote him in, the state has "surrendered," as reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Early voting ends TODAY.
• FLORIDA: Trump is in Daytona Beach tonight at 7 PM ET.
• MICHIGAN: NRSC chair Sen. Tim Scott is in Michigan TODAY "to make sure that Abdul El-Sayed never gets to the United States Senate," as reported by Fox News.
• ALASKA: House Oversight Chair James Comer is demanding testimony from the operatives named in the "Decoy Dan" report and threatening subpoenas, as reported by Axios. Peltola's campaign and the DSCC deny involvement.
• RALLIES ARE BACK ON: Trump will be in Kansas and Iowa Sunday, plus nearly 20 tele-rallies, as reported by AP.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR US: Democrats are spending big in states we have held for years. Four seats decide the Senate, and turnout decides the four. Vote and bring 3 Republicans with you. 🇺🇸

THIS IS A MAJOR SHIFT - THE DOJ HAS CHANGED ITS APPROACH
The DOJ is no longer just asking election authorities for voter files.
Federal grand-jury subpoenas are now reaching directly into the Los Angeles County election office - seeking internal communications, procedures for identifying noncitizen voting, evidence officials possessed, what federal officials told them, and what they did after being told.
This is important.
There is a huge difference between investigating an individual illegal voter and investigating what election authorities KNEW, what systems they had in place, what federal authorities warned them about, and how they responded.
A grand jury does not prove wrongdoing. But it does mean this has moved into the federal criminal investigative process.
And look at the timeline:
Election Day is November 3.
The first grand-jury appearances and document production are reportedly scheduled for November 4 — the very next day.
That is big.
For years, Americans asking serious questions about voter rolls, eligibility, procedures and election administration were told the problems were insignificant, theoretical, or not worth investigating.
Now DOJ is asking the questions that should have been asked all along:
What did election officials know?
When did they know it?
What safeguards existed?
What were they told by federal officials?
And what did they do after being told?
That is where accountability begins.
With evidence.
With records.
With subpoenas.
The DOJ appears to be getting serious.
Election authorities are not above scrutiny.
And if laws were broken — by voters OR officials — follow the evidence wherever it leads.
Real voters. Real votes. Real counts. Real proof.

There are a number of Republican voters unhappy with their choices at the top of the ticket in Kentucky.
Rather than trying to berate them into voting for the Republican, or being shocked that a bunch of voters whom many Republican politicians and thought leaders have said need to be purged, silenced, or pushed out are now unwilling to vote for candidates who belong to the same party they were told they aren't welcome in, I'm going to ask for something different.
Please show up and vote in the down-ballot races. These races are actually far more important to your day-to-day life than most realize. The roads you drive on, the utilities you use every day, and the emergency services you rely on are all run by these people.
Having people who understand the proper role of government and are good stewards of your tax dollars in these positions will have a greater impact on your life than who your congressman or senator is.
Even if you have to leave the top of the ticket blank because you feel no one has earned your vote, please show up and vote conservative in the down-ballot races.

RULE 3
Show nothing to your friend that may affright him.
Young George Washington copied this as his third Rule of Civility. In plain language it means: don’t deliberately scare, startle, or distress the people closest to you.
The old word “affright” simply means to frighten. The rule is short because the principle is simple—friendship carries a duty of care. We do not use our words, our actions, or our knowledge of someone’s weaknesses to rattle them for amusement or advantage.
Today the same standard still applies. A true friend does not ambush you with bad news in public, mock what you fear, or treat your trust as a source of entertainment. Consideration is not softness; it is the quiet strength that keeps relationships intact.
Civility is not only how we behave with strangers. It is also how carefully we treat the people who have chosen to stand near us.
Rule 3 of George Washington’s Rules of Civility.
We’re posting them one by one so we can practice them together.

No, this is a sign of social atomization and heavier marijuana use
Pretty much all of the West's great accomplishments came while its leading men were drinking heavily
Wellington was considered a light drinker as he had a bottle of wine a day on campaign conquering India. Georgian and Victorian Britain conquered the world while led by "six-bottle men". Washington loved to toss back Madeira after dinner, every night, while hosting visitors constantly at Mount Vernon
Meanwhile the ganja enjoyers were sitting around in their huts

• NBC reports Trump is pushing the administration to intensify the probe, including renewed pursuit of criminal charges, according to two people familiar with the White House's plans.
• DOJ amended its Alaska lawsuit Thursday to add the New York Times reporting and a new constitutional claim, then asked Judge Gleason to throw out the motions to dismiss the case, as reported by CNBC. She hasn't ruled yet. Peltola's campaign and the DSCC deny any involvement.
• Sen. Dan Sullivan released his first ad since the Times report and is asking supporters not to rank Peltola on the ranked-choice ballot, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR US: Alaska could help decide the Senate. If you back Sen. Sullivan, vote, and know how the ranked-choice ballot works.

A resurfaced 2009 promotional video shows Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed addressing students at the University of Michigan's Muslim Students Association (MSA), an organization whose national movement has historical links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The MSA was founded in 1963 at the University of Illinois by Muslim students, including individuals associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. A George Washington University study confirms that Brotherhood members held influential positions in the organization's early leadership.
El-Sayed previously served as vice president of the University of Michigan's MSA, according to a 2012 interview with The Nation.
The controversy intensified after resurfaced social media posts by his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, described their mother's involvement with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt during the 1970s.
In a 2012 post, Abdelhadi wrote that she had spoken with her mother about her activism in the organization during college.
President Donald Trump has also accused El-Sayed of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood is banned in countries like Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia but has received state support from Turkey and Qatar.
