Northern Nigeria has a radicalisation problem that needs to be addressed. From videos of children being indoctrinated with hate to the assassination of a man who preaches peaceful coexistence, this subject is too broad for a one-page newspaper column, but it cannot go unaddressed, so I addressed it.

Indeed, under Islamic Sharia, even if someone is not a Muslim, he has committed no offense against you as a Muslim (it is Allah the Creator who determines such matters, not you). Therefore you have no justification to oppress him, let alone kill him. This applies even more if he is a Muslim whose only difference is that his creed or understanding of the religion differs from yours.

More than 4 decades ago, the current Mufti of Nigeria, Sheikh Sheriff Ibrahim Saleh, wrote a book on Takfirism, which he described as the biggest danger approaching Nigerians. Boko Haram didn't exist then, but 40 years later he is still alive to tell us, "Didn't I tell you so"?

I resisted the urge to engage with this disturbing post, but it kept appearing on my feed, and each time, it bothered me even more. These are supposed to be the finest among us: a trained medical doctor dispensing such crude reasoning that you would mistake him for a practising Boko Haram ideologue. A man known for preaching religious tolerance and peace was assassinated for simply disagreeing with certain people’s sectarian views, and you claim he posed a greater danger to Islam than the terrorists and bandits butchering people across the North. What sort of moral reasoning leads an educated person to such a conclusion?
I do not disagree that we, as a nation and as a region, are badly governed, and that the historical disparities are well documented. But there is a reason why, despite our shared dysfunction, the South has fared better than we have. We cannot build a peaceful society while harbouring this dangerous ideology, this disease of rejoicing over the murder of another human being just because you consider his religious convictions incompatible with yours. There is something profoundly disturbing about a society in which even the educated can rationalise such barbarism, and where sectarian intolerance has so completely corrupted our moral judgement that we can no longer recognise the humanity of those with whom we disagree.
You do not have to agree with a man’s interpretation of religion to defend his right to live. And if your understanding of faith leaves you more outraged by theological disagreement than by the slaughter of innocent human beings, perhaps it is your understanding of faith that deserves the closest scrutiny.
I hope you can open your mind and read the works of other sects like the Shiites, Quranists, Neo-Mu'tazilites, etc., and not hide behind the fear of having your beliefs corrupted. Just open your mind and read even Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. God doesn't fear any arguments.
Doleh Kaceh haka, you are tweeting from Abuja in your well furnished office enjoying AC .
Your family aren’t getting kidnapped.
Your female relatives aren’t raped.
Your family aren’t being beaten for no reason.
Your family aren’t having sleepless nights.
Your family aren’t the ones experiencing the trauma.

The only difference between some of you here and Shekau is that you are cowards.
Extremists cunts 😡
He’s a common LGA chairman in faraway Kaduna. Nobody in Lagos knows him, at least not yet but LGA chairmen have a knack for rising into political prominence. People like Samuel Ortom (governor, minister), Ekeremadu (senator), Nyesom Wike (governor, minister), George Akume ( governor, senator, minister, SGF) & Ganduje (governor, ruling party chairman). There’s Ahmed ALIYU, Dikko Radda & Caleb Mutfwang; current serving governors that were once LGA chairmen. There are many more. In Kaduna, where this man is allegedly an LGA chairman, there’s Senator Hunkuyi who went from chairman to lawmaker.
Nigerians from all over Nigeria need to make things like this their business. These extremists occupy key positions of power. They influence key policy & security decisions, they control budgets running into billions of Naira. We need to simply care beyond the noise on X and we need to decide whether we want to be in a situation where we can’t influence the kind of people that control the trajectory of our shared destiny; because really, Shehu Buba can become a senator whether the English Alhaji likes it or not. It’s not up to him but he has to accept that the former “common” caretaker chairman of Toro local government had such a successful political career that he was put in charge of Nigeria’s senate committee on National security & intelligence. National i.e not just Toro or Bauchi. National as in Niger, Benue, Oyo & Enugu whether they like it or not.
We really really need to have a rethink.

I typed and deleted my thoughts like 5 times because I really can’t comprehend how a person with an MD degree will think a different interpretation of religion is more dangerous than a terrorist. You are a disgrace to your profession, which is an evidence-based science.

I totally blame the authorities for the madness going on in the North. If individuals who pose potential terrorist threats like this man can roam freely without consequences, then we clearly don’t have a functional society.

The point is not if what he said is theologically correct or not.
The point is nobody deserves to die for understanding a religion differently. Nobody deserves to face the death threats he received while alive for simply subscribing to a different creed.
