A life long Trek fan from the original shaping my childhood through TNG, VOY, DS9, DIS and SNW. TNG stood out as a catalyst, due to both my age at the time and the world in which it aired...and Patrick Stewart was at the heart of it. Rest in Power, and thank you. He made it so.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

As an Editor, in past ~6mo, we are receiving an avalanche of unsolicited review articles (“scoping” “systematic”, narrative, NOS) on topics and ?s NO ONE EVER has asked and clearly with heavy AI lift. Even the cover letters all read the same…alarming and sad. #publishing

"The odd thing, however, about almost all of the discourses about the loneliness pandemic and the impact of the Internet on young men, including “The Grift Economy,” is that they prudishly leave out one of its most harmful offerings: online porn. Porn has become de facto sex education for the young, and a lot of it, to put it mildly, does not encourage healthy habits." thenation.com/article/societ…

Shouldn't "the question" be how we can defend #HigherEd and #Democracy? Complicity with lawless attacks may be convenient, even profitable for individual schools & publications, but it is ruinous for the sector and the country. @aacu @aaup @TheFIREorg @ACEducation @wesleyan_u
At a time when many college presidents avoid public fights, Wesleyan’s Michael Roth is taking the opposite approach — calling out the Trump administration and peers he sees as too quiet.
The question is whether he’s building a defense of higher ed or standing mostly alone. chroni.cl/4yIr776

“A feature of fascism is the transformation of politics into spectacle. Fascism wants to reduce active citizens into voyeurs—especially voyeurs of cruelty and death. Such degradation of a democratic public is key to fascism’s project and to its success.”

everything that Anne Carson has written is risky & original in some (unpredictable) way. truly an unclassifiable imagination-- poet, translator, essayist, philosopher, observer of the vicissitudes of life; we'd met just once decades ago at Princeton where Anne Carson was an instructor in the Classics Dept. & I was--hypothetically--just a "visitor" for one year in Creative Writing.
not predictable that Anne would move on, & on, & on to numerous universities & I would remain at Princeton; now hoping that she is in Canada & not caught up in toxic US politics so antithetical to the humanism & freedom of the imagination required for the soul to breathe.
