David Niven was a Hollywood star, war hero and SOE officer: a celebrity soldier.
He served with the British Army in WW2 across Europe, including the D-Day landings in Normandy, the Falaise Gap, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge.
And rose in the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel.

On 24 March 1944, German police came to a farmhouse in Markowa, Poland. They shot the eight Jews hiding there. Then they shot Józef Ulma, his pregnant wife Wiktoria, and all six of their children. Their crime was giving shelter to the Jews.
Even after the murders, other villagers in Markowa kept hiding Jews, and at least 21 survived there. In 2023 the Catholic Church beatified the whole family, including the unborn child. Józef was the village photographer and took this family photo himself.
The village of Markowa went above and beyond without any regard for their own safety to save their Jewish neighbors.
