Today we introduce the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry, MetPsy, built for researchers and clinicians dedicated to advancing metabolic interventions in mental health. MetPsy gives the global community one place to find collaborators, access shared best practices and training, and follow the latest research. It also offers funders a clear entry point to support the field as it moves from promising studies to clinical implementation. The launch coincides with a $20 million grant from Baszucki Group to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry at @McLeanHospital, a member of Mass General Brigham. A defining initiative for the field, the Center will combine research, clinical practice, and specialized training to deliver metabolic approaches in psychiatric care at scale, a model we hope will set the stage for others to follow.

A new study funded by Baszucki Group is bringing an innovative mental health model to resource-poor rural areas. Led by Dr. Will Rutland, researchers at @UABHeersink are launching a new study in partnership with a local food bank and @HatchforHunger to deliver ketogenic food boxes to participants with bipolar disorder. This community-based approach allows ketogenic therapy to be introduced alongside existing treatment modalities, with the goal of expanding care options in rural areas that experience severe shortages in psychiatric care. “This study reflects something we deeply believe: that the communities with the greatest need should have access to the most promising treatments,” said Julie Milder, PhD, Director of Neuroscience at Baszucki Group. “Dr. Rutland and his team are proposing a model that takes equity seriously — using existing community infrastructure to conduct rigorous research within a population that is historically underrepresented in clinical research.” Read more about how Dr. Rutland and his team are pioneering equity in clinical research: bit.ly/4jWLSaf

Standing room only for talks about nutrition science on Capitol Hill! It was an honor to join researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and advocates for The Power and Peril of Food: The Latest Science on Your Mood, Memory, Metabolism, and Longevity. I am grateful to Dariush Mozaffarian, the Food Is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, and Food Tank for convening this important conversation on Capitol Hill about nutrition and health. I was able to share our son's story of recovery from mental illness using a nutritional metabolic therapy with policy makers who have the power to drive change. After a five-year battle with Bipolar I, our son has now been in remission for longer than he was ill. Today's discussion reinforced an important reality: while philanthropy can help spark innovation, it cannot fund the scale of research needed to transform healthcare. That is why increased federal investment in nutrition science is so essential. We need the rigorous research that will give clinicians, patients, and families the evidence they deserve. In 2024, a single serious mental illness, schizophrenia, burdened our country with $300 billion in societal costs. That is six times the NIH's annual research budget of $50 billion. And that doesn't count the emotional costs to families. Can we, as a country, afford to NOT investigate dietary interventions with the potential to send mental illnesses like my son's--and many other chronic conditions--into remission? Thank you to everyone working to advance this field. I'm encouraged by the growing momentum behind nutrition science and look forward to continuing this important work together. New findings published today in Schizophrenia Bulletin report results from the first randomized controlled trial of ketogenic therapy in people living with psychotic disorders, offering encouraging early evidence. Led by researchers at @UCSF, including Judith Ford, PhD, Samantha Abram, PhD, Juliette Kyner, and colleagues, the study enrolled participants with schizophrenia-spectrum or bipolar I disorders. The trial, partly funded by Baszucki Group, found rapid metabolic improvements with a ketogenic diet compared to diet-as-usual during an initial one-month open-label RCT phase. Participants who continued in the optional four-month extension saw additional gains across metabolic, psychiatric, and cognitive measures. “This study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting ketogenic therapy is a feasible and safe approach worth further investigation in serious mental illness,” said @janellison, co-founder and president of Baszucki Group. “Continued investment in rigorous scientific research will be important to better understand its potential and expand the scope of future studies.” Read the press release: bit.ly/4pexA5F Read the paper: doi.org/10.1093/schbul/sbag0…

A pilot study published today in @CommsMedicine demonstrates the potential for a new approach to treating anorexia nervosa. The research from @UCSDMedSchool, led by @GuidoFrank, reports that a ketogenic nutritional intervention was feasible and safe for patients with weight-normalized anorexia nervosa. Significant improvements were observed in eating disorder symptoms, with nearly 3 in 4 of study completers no longer meeting criteria for an anorexia nervosa diagnosis, and all completers experiencing an improvement in depression scores. “This study highlights the promise of dietary interventions that target underlying neurometabolic dysfunction for even the most intractable psychiatric conditions like anorexia nervosa,” said @janellison, co-founder and president of Baszucki Group, which funded the study. “We hope this work drives awareness and support for researching and delivering ketogenic therapy for eating disorders, providing new hope for patients and their families.” Read the paper: doi.org/10.1038/s43856-026-0… Read the press release: bit.ly/49EQPyH Learn more about the extension for the study for patients with both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: bit.ly/3PUK5WS
