The documentary film, Healing Humanity, is out now! As one of its executive producers, I'm honored to have played a small role in bringing this project to the world. This big-hearted independent film was made on a shoe-string and was a true labor of love for Kerry Mann and everyone else involved. Five years ago, when our family first learned about ketogenic therapy for mental health, there was almost nothing out there to point people toward. No press coverage. No films. No clinical trials in the scientific literature. Just a handful of individuals and clinicians who were seeing how a specific change in nutrition and metabolism could lead to healing the body and mind. That’s a big part of why I said yes to this film. Healing Humanity began with Kerry Mann Jr., a homesteader suffering from deep depression, who was 100 pounds overweight and was told his congestive heart failure and arthritis were permanent. When Kerry adopted a what he refers to as a proper human diet, he reclaimed his mental and physical health. Then he and his co-director Adam Lacy, who has his own long recovery story from traumatic brain injury, spent three years driving around the country with a camera asking one question: who else has a similar story? The answer turned out to be a lot of people. The film weaves together roughly 60 interviews with physicians, researchers, and ordinary people who got their lives back by returning to a proper human diet. Type 2 diabetes. Depression and anxiety. Autoimmune disease. Chronic pain. Women’s health. Aging. Among the clinicians who sat down with Kerry are @GeorgiaEdeMD, @KenDBerryMD, @SBakerMD, @ifixhearts and @thomasseyfried, and they don’t hold back. What I love most about this film is that it isn’t a lecture. It’s people telling you, in their own words, what it felt like to be told “there’s nothing more we can do,” and what it felt like to find out that wasn’t true--exactly the journey our son @matthewbaszucki travelled. This is the same conversation we’ve been having for years: that what we eat shapes our metabolism, that our metabolism shapes our brains, and that millions of people living with chronic physical and mental illness have never once been told that food might be part of the answer. The science is still catching up to the stories. But the stories are real, and they deserve to be heard. Kerry and Adam made this film independently, funded by thousands of small donors, and they’ve set it up so every dollar from purchases goes first toward giving the film away free to people who can’t afford it. That tells you everything about who they are. Watch it tonight. Then watch it again with a parent, a sibling, or a friend who has been told their diagnosis is forever. Gift it to someone who needs to know that healing is possible. @HHDocumentary Rent or buy here: healinghumanity.movie #HealingHumanity #FoodIsMedicine #ProperHumanDiet

Standing room only for talks about nutrition science on Capitol Hill! It was an honor to join researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and advocates for The Power and Peril of Food: The Latest Science on Your Mood, Memory, Metabolism, and Longevity. I am grateful to Dariush Mozaffarian, the Food Is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, and Food Tank for convening this important conversation on Capitol Hill about nutrition and health. I was able to share our son's story of recovery from mental illness using a nutritional metabolic therapy with policy makers who have the power to drive change. After a five-year battle with Bipolar I, our son has now been in remission for longer than he was ill. Today's discussion reinforced an important reality: while philanthropy can help spark innovation, it cannot fund the scale of research needed to transform healthcare. That is why increased federal investment in nutrition science is so essential. We need the rigorous research that will give clinicians, patients, and families the evidence they deserve. In 2024, a single serious mental illness, schizophrenia, burdened our country with $300 billion in societal costs. That is six times the NIH's annual research budget of $50 billion. And that doesn't count the emotional costs to families. Can we, as a country, afford to NOT investigate dietary interventions with the potential to send mental illnesses like my son's--and many other chronic conditions--into remission? Thank you to everyone working to advance this field. I'm encouraged by the growing momentum behind nutrition science and look forward to continuing this important work together. When we learned about ketogenic therapy five years ago, there were no press articles describing how keto could help with serious mental illness. Now one of the leading science journals in the country is covering the story. Thank you @sciam for this excellent article. Please forwared this to anyone in your life whose current psychiatric treatment isn't helping them thrive.

New data from one of our @BaszuckiGroup funded studies that just published yesterday. It may seem counterintuitive that ketogenic therapy could be beneficial for those living with anorexia nervosa. Especially considering that dietary fat is often a nutrient those living with anorexia are concerned with. But this new pilot study reported that 82% of study participants were able to adhere to keto, and all study completers experienced meaningful benefit in some way. See all the study details in this thread from @Metabolic_Mind Read the full paper here: doi.org/10.1038/s43856-026-0… Visit Metabolic Mind to learn more about this publication.

Very much agreed, we are exploring in parallel brain glucose metabolism, as biological marker, as well as test the efficacy of ketogenic nutrition in different weight groups, and have also started studying the effects of exogenous ketones and behavior effects.
Great thought! We are still working to understand the exact mechanisms but this is essentially the theory that Dr. Frank has proposed. It would be interesting to see what role exogenous ketones could play, and future research can address this.

A pilot study published today in @CommsMedicine demonstrates the potential for a new approach to treating anorexia nervosa. The research from @UCSDMedSchool, led by @GuidoFrank, reports that a ketogenic nutritional intervention was feasible and safe for patients with weight-normalized anorexia nervosa. Significant improvements were observed in eating disorder symptoms, with nearly 3 in 4 of study completers no longer meeting criteria for an anorexia nervosa diagnosis, and all completers experiencing an improvement in depression scores. “This study highlights the promise of dietary interventions that target underlying neurometabolic dysfunction for even the most intractable psychiatric conditions like anorexia nervosa,” said @janellison, co-founder and president of Baszucki Group, which funded the study. “We hope this work drives awareness and support for researching and delivering ketogenic therapy for eating disorders, providing new hope for patients and their families.” Read the paper: doi.org/10.1038/s43856-026-0… Read the press release: bit.ly/49EQPyH Learn more about the extension for the study for patients with both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: bit.ly/3PUK5WS

After just 14 weeks. Results like this are unheard of for #anorexia with standard of care treatments. Bring on the #RCT and so appreciate @GuidoFrank's ground breaking study accumulating evidence to support his existing theory. "By the end of the study, 72% of the participants had EDE-Q and depression scores within the normal range, indicating significant improvements in eating disorder symptoms, including reduced dietary restraint, less concern about food and body shape, and improved mood." doi.org/10.1038/s43856-026-0… – at Vancouver, WA

After a three year labor of love, our film, The Cholesterol Code, is streaming on Amazon. You can help by buying or renting it on Amazon (for less than $3), watching it, then leaving an honest rating and review. Early traction gives us the best chance of getting picked up by Prime. The film features individuals in our community who have healed from mental illness using ketogenic therapy, only to find their LDL cholesterol jump, raising concerns from the medical establishment about the risk of heart disease. Do we really want people who no longer experience mania, psychosis, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, or delusions to stop keto because of one lab number? For those of us involved in the metabolic mental health movement, that is the key question this film asks--and it's a question the scientific community must take seriously. Lives depend upon it. Watch it, rate it, and share it with all your friends!
