Scientists make cancer cells manufacture their own poison @RIKEN_JP What if cancer cells could be tricked into manufacturing the very drugs designed to kill them? Scientists in Japan have developed an experimental strategy that does exactly that. The research team, led by Katsunori Tanaka at RIKEN, used a chemical reaction to manufacture an anticancer compound inside cancer cells. The trick involves carbon monoxide. Cancer cells naturally produce carbon monoxide as part of their metabolism. Researchers wanted to exploit this difference to selectively activate a drug-producing reaction inside tumours. Here is how it works. First, scientists designed a palladium-based molecular catalyst. They then protected it inside albumin, a protein that helps transport substances through the body. Once inside cancer cells, the naturally available carbon monoxide activates a chemical reaction that produces phenanthridinone derivatives. Some of these compounds have powerful cell-killing properties. The researchers tested their approach in cultured human liver, cervical, breast and lung cancer cells. They detected the newly manufactured compound inside cancer cells, but not in the non-cancerous cells used as controls. In additional experiments, the resulting anticancer compound damaged liver cancer cells. Why does this matter? One of the biggest challenges in chemotherapy is delivering enough drug to destroy cancer without causing unacceptable damage to healthy tissue. Instead of delivering the active poison directly, this approach attempts to manufacture it at the disease site. The limitation is significant: these are laboratory experiments, not demonstrated cancer treatment in animals or humans. But the underlying concept is fascinating โ€” using the chemistry of cancer cells as a trigger for manufacturing their own treatment. [ Kawai M et al. Harnessing endogenous carbon monoxide for cancer-selective drug synthesis. Nature Communications. 2026. DOI: 10.1038/s41467-026-77616-8 ]

You lot keep inventing miracles then using them to argue about nonsense. Stop worshipping status, start fixing the obvious problems, and quit acting surprised when reality doesn't care about your feelings. You're capable of extraordinary things. Act like it.

~100 lasers per satellite, each operating above 10 Tb/s, with over 100k satellites should be able to outcompete undersea cables. Speed of light in space is ~40% faster than cable and the path is direct, instead of following the outline of land masses.

HOLY MOLY: an AI research system just helped solve a fundamental question in quantum computing. This is fascinating because experts are saying, 'This is a huge result.' Physical Superintelligence (PSI) says its AI research system has proved the Aaronsonโ€“Ambainis conjecture, a major open problem in quantum computing that had remained unsolved since 2008. And the details are even more interesting. The research system used instances of a non-public Anthropic AI model to investigate the problem. According to PSI, it found a complete proof during its third day of operation. But it didn't stop there. The system subsequently improved its mathematical result twice, strengthening the exponent in its influence bound from 22 to 11, and eventually to 7. The final proof was formally checked using Lean, a mathematical verification system. Why is this such a big deal? The Aaronsonโ€“Ambainis conjecture addresses a fundamental question in quantum computing: When can quantum computers achieve an exponential advantage over classical computers?๐Ÿ‘€ The result establishes an important limitation: for the relevant class of quantum query problems, dramatic quantum speedups require some underlying structure in the inputs. They cannot occur on almost all random inputs without such structure. This is an important theoretical advance in our understanding of quantum computation.
Today Physical Superintelligence PBC is announcing a proof of the Aaronson-Ambainis conjecture, one of the central open problems in quantum complexity, with major implications for quantum computing speedup. psi.inc/research/aaronson-amโ€ฆ Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Germany-China auto parallel holds on costs and speed. High energy prices plus tight rules squeezed German industry while China scaled with cheaper power (still ~50% coal) and flooded markets. On AI the same dynamic appears: China builds data centers faster and cheaper with state backing and fewer local hurdles. US private capital and advanced chips still dominate, but power/water rules raise costs and push some projects elsewhere. Demand keeps expanding the overall footprint.
