📢 Very excited to share this review led by our talented postdoc Bhavya (@Bhavya391554759)!
Bhavya took a critical look at decades of lactate biology, asking what the evidence actually tells us and where our assumptions have gotten ahead of the science.

I first presented this story at @KeystoneSymp in Breckenridge in 2022.
@ZoltArany was skeptical. But he took the idea seriously.
Over the next few years, whenever we crossed paths, he kept challenging me on it. Those conversations helped me understand just how high the burden of proof would be to convince the field. The paper is better because of them.
Eventually: “You might be right.”
Four years later, @AranyLab’s Trace Thome and Zolt have written a thoughtful commentary on our paper. Apparently we’ve advanced to “dogma-defying.”
One day I might actually be right...

A tremendously collaborative effort led by co-first authors: @molecularpepsi (our amazing former postdoc), @joevisker, @jn_velascosilva, and James Carrington (our awesome grad student)!
Congrats to all authors, co-senior authors @gsducker and @StavrosDrakos, and everyone who contributed!
I'm very happy to share the final version of our paper, “MCT1-dependent mitochondrial lactate import sustains cardiac metabolism,” out in Nature! We show how lactate fuels heart mitochondria and helps protect the heart during stress. nature.com/articles/s41586-0… @UofUBiochem 1/10

Jokes aside, this one means a lot.
It started when I was a postdoc, followed me into starting my own lab, and took a remarkable group of people to get across the finish line.
The question was simple: can lactate enter mitochondria?
Turns out, yes.

Folks, despite my best efforts, I regret to announce that I have published a paper in @Nature.
I can finally become one of those annoying PIs who tells trainees they don’t need a Nature paper to get a faculty job.

Before there was a Cluntun Lab, there was a question:
Can lactate enter mitochondria?
Today, years after that question first took shape, the answer is published in @Nature.
Yes. And MCT1 helps get it there.

The work began at @UUtah and continued after the Cluntun Lab opened at Rutgers, with members of our new lab joining the effort.
Grateful for the support of @NIH and proud to continue building this work at @RutgersU and @rutgershealth.

Our work deorphanizing MCT6 as the missing gut Lac-Phe transporter is out today @CellCellPress: local gut lactate metabolism influences gut-brain crosstalk, and also explains metformin’s effects on body weight. Congratulations to @Shuke_Xiao @alanshtung!

Lactate is one of the most measured, yet most misunderstood, metabolites in biology. This BioEssays review revisits common myths and highlights its central roles in metabolism, redox balance, and metabolic communication. 👉 doi.org/10.1002/bies.70181

Lactate is toxic. Lactate causes fatigue. High lactate is bad.
We hear some version of this all the time.
But how much of it is actually true?
So we wrote a review separating what we know about lactate from what we’ve simply assumed for decades.
Led by our fantastic postdoc Bhavya Blaze! @Bhavya391554759

So happy to see this come out. Keep an eye on this, it’s a game changer!
Happy to share our new preprint from @RutterLab. To understand how genes are controlled, we developed a method we call TRoUT-FISH, using CRISPR + RNA-FISH. We found that glycolytic gene expression is fine-tuned by lineage specifying transcription factors.

Proud milestone for our lab.
This Perspective brings together ideas we've been developing for years into a conceptual framework for understanding lactate biology. I hope it provides a useful lens for thinking about lactate beyond concentration alone.
Huge congratulations to @NichoOffei for leading this work, and thanks to @RutterLab for recommending us for this invited Perspective.
