WHAT PEOPLE SEE vs. WHAT PEOPLE DON'T SEE People see our "successes" or "failures" but they don't always see the reasons behind those results!

PLAYERS: Anyone can have a good attitude when they're playing well, the team is winning, they're getting minutes, or the refs are not "picking on them". But a player's true self shows when things are not going well. Have a good attitude regardless of the circumstances.

ADs, don't ask your hiring committee if a coaching candidate "fits." Ask what evidence they have that they build trust, develop leaders, handle conflict well, and strengthen a program over time. Evidence beats impressions every time.

Coach retention doesn’t start on Day 1. It starts during the interview. When someone arrives feeling misled about the environment or lifestyle, the exit clock starts immediately, even if the job is good. ~ via @RecruitwithDan

Average means you're just as close to the bottom as you are to the top. Going through the motions and doing "just enough" to get by doesn't maximize your potential. 𝙉𝙤𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮

ADs: You wouldn't want a coach to stay in their office all year and never go out recruiting. You wouldn't want a coach to build a team just from people filling out online questionnaires. So why do we that in our hiring process? Why do we wait for people to come to us?

The basketball world has a long memory. The assistant you ignore today may become a head coach. The administrator you dismiss may become an AD. The young staffer you barely acknowledge may someday be making hiring decisions. Treat people well because it’s the right thing to do. It also happens to be really good career advice.

RESPONDING TO MISTAKES "I'm letting the team down because I turned the ball over ... missed a shot ... blew a defensive assignment. No, you're letting the team down when it parlays into 4 or 5 possessions after that. Pick yourself up... You're playing a game that's imperfect."
