This is so weird to me, because if someone was reposting a bunch of fan artists’ works without permission, people would understand why the artists would be mad. “No reposts” is OK for art, but apparently writers should just be grateful for any attention at all? Like…no??
You can go to the museum.
You can love the art.
You can go home and print out pictures of the art you love and hang them on your walls.
Your friends and family can enjoy the printed art.
But if you open your house as a museum, the artists are probably not gonna love that.

About to mute “ao3 is an archive” bc none of yall seem to know what it fucking means. It means they won’t delete your shit for no reason. It doesnt mean fic preservation is the sole goal of ao3. Hence why they make you get permission to upload a deleted fic
Comments and kudos are one thing, but it’s not even just about that kind of engagement.
It’s a special feeling watching that hit counter go up even as the kudos stagnate, knowing that someone out there is coming back again and again. I love even the silent readers.

My hot(?) take is that the same fandom norms and etiquette on reposting fanart, should apply to fanfic.
This is regardless of how permissive individual writers are about their fic, just like how the norms exist regardless of how permissive individual artists are about their art.
Frustrated that I never thought to put “IF YOU ARE READING THIS IN A GOOGLE DRIVE, I FUCKING HATE YOU AND YOU GARGLE DONKEY BALLS” as opening notes for all my fics.
Will rectify when ao3 is back up, but suuuuuucks that current downloaded versions won’t have it.
Personal side note: I’ve got a difficult funeral tomorrow and an elderly loved one freshly in hospital as of like 2 hours ago, so when I say fuck everyone for this bullshit discourse that wouldn’t be discourse if everyone had, like, kinda half morals, I mean

You guys assemble like the fucking avengers when it comes to defending fanartists who have their work re-uploaded against their wishes (and rightfully so!), but when it comes to authors it’s crickets at best and gaslighting at worst

OH the reasons you don’t want to have to DM writers before putting them in your Google Drives are twofold, eh?
1) You think they’re going to say no, and it feels weird bc you’ve already decided you’re putting the fic in anyway
