About to mute “ao3 is an archive” bc none of yall seem to know what it fucking means. It means they won’t delete your shit for no reason. It doesnt mean fic preservation is the sole goal of ao3. Hence why they make you get permission to upload a deleted fic

My hot(?) take is that the same fandom norms and etiquette on reposting fanart, should apply to fanfic.
This is regardless of how permissive individual writers are about their fic, just like how the norms exist regardless of how permissive individual artists are about their art.

I've seen a few people be like "please don't upload my locked and or deleted fics to giant gdrives" and the amount of people who are like how dare you try and maintain some level of control over your own work

Consent is not implied by accessibility. Authors decide where their work is published and how it's distributed. You are not entitled to someone else's work just because you can access it.
You guys assemble like the fucking avengers when it comes to defending fanartists who have their work re-uploaded against their wishes (and rightfully so!), but when it comes to authors it’s crickets at best and gaslighting at worst

yes the download button is at the top of every fic on ao3 but u can also download any fanart w two clicks yet everyone knows u cannot repost fanart…

This whole AO3 disaster has really exposed how many people don't understand consent, don't care to understand it, and are somehow incredibly proud of that. What an embarrassing hill to die on.

Yes. You are. This mentality destroys fandom spaces. If I had wanted to keep my fics in a silent archive, I would've just left it in the folders on my pc, no reason to share online. One thing is not getting any reach, it happens, another is publishing passively like a machine.

I don't mind if you download my fics to read, I mind if you upload it into drives or any third party platform or basically redistributing it.
I'll be adding this as a note on all my old fics and new fics from now on
"dont post on a site that has a download button on the top of the page then" yes and every fucking website on earth has a 'download image' button on art posts but you all know not to repost peoples art onto other sites dont you. dont be fucking obtuse.

and if your argument is that you /can/ do it therefore it's the right thing to do then i beg you to think carefully whether this reasoning applied to any other aspect of your life would result in a trip to jail and what does that says of you as a person.
Honourable Goober the Ween || they/them 🍉 retweeted
You can see that fandom etiquette is dead from the replies and quotes. Fics are supposed to stay on ao3 and if an author asks you to stop posting them somewhere else you should comply. It's how we've always done things. Being able to download it doesn't mean it's yours.

Actually I think people sharing around their downloads of fics publicly is kinda rude, especially if it’s fic that the author had taken down for a reason. Keep it to private exchanges if you must and maybe authors will have posted links to fics and you should check for them

put it this way: i'm a fanartist, and i'm totally alright with people printing my fanart out for their personal enjoyment. i would not be okay with someone printing out 200 copies of my fanart to hand out for free at an event without my permission or knowledge.

i don’t think it’s naive for authors to feel conflicted about their works getting uploaded in any other place other than the one they specifically consented to though? ao3 made it possible for works to be downloaded, true, but for personal use.
Honourable Goober the Ween || they/them 🍉 retweeted
i really don't think we should be mass-sharing epubs of fanfic, man. even though it's public, it just seems rude and inconsiderate to take the distribution away from writers like that. go to your favourite authors' social medias and politely ask if they'd be willing to share.

i don't have an issue with people downloading my fics for their own use, but i think uploading them and making them widely available on a site i have not agreed to have them on without my consent is a little bit different

I got mad so I made this image. I’ll start using it from now on

And I'm 1000% of the belief that this toxic behavior within current fandom is as a result of how bleak the current state of the world is.
Everyone's frustrated and because they can't take their anger out whats ACTUALLY causing their issues they cope by being insufferable online.
