According to Abdul Abbasi, the Chair of the Board of Directors for Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, the cost of living crisis has a massive effect on student well being - driving up usage at the University of Alberta’s student food bank by 600% in the last five years alone.

🚨This report produced by @CASAACAE based on a survey done by my colleague @OksanaKishchuk is worth a read.
It offers a candid and often sobering snapshot of life as a post-secondary student in 2024. What it reveals is a generation under pressure—financially, mentally, and emotionally—doing its best to persevere through one of the most expensive and uncertain eras in Canadian higher education.
We spoke with thousands of students across the country to understand how they’re coping with rising costs, what supports they need, and what their futures might look like.
The data is clear:
✅40% of students are skipping meals due to cost.
✅Nearly one in five are using food banks.
✅Over a third expect to graduate with more than $20,000 in debt.
✅And mental health concerns—especially among marginalized groups—are growing.
Yet amidst the struggle, there’s remarkable resilience.
✅Two-thirds are working while studying.
✅Many are optimistic about finding work in their field after graduation.
This report is both a wake-up call and a reminder: students are not just recipients of education—they are workers, caregivers, and future leaders. They deserve policy that recognizes their reality.

Remarkable photo. The VP External portfolio at student unions - that is the one charged with government/community relations - until quite recently was overwhlemingly male.
Today, students sat down for a meeting with the Prime Minister’s Office to discuss the gaps that post secondary students are facing in today’s economic climate.
Thank you for hearing CASA’s #AdvoWeek2023 recommendations!

"The value of the tri-agency scholarships and fellowships has not changed in 20 years...
Canada now ranks 26th in the OECD in the proportion of those with graduate-level education.
These and other indicators illustrate a hollowing out of Canada’s research ecosystem."
