BTech vs BEng vs BSc Eng should not distract us from the bigger question: Who is competent, professionally accountable and capable of solving the engineering problem? South Africa needs the full engineering team: technicians, technologists and engineers. #AgendaForEngineering 🇿🇦 #Technicians #Technologists #Engineers

Dear @DepartmentPWI How can we demand engineering leadership in municipalities, SOEs and infrastructure institutions if we do not demand it at the home of the engineering profession? The 7th Term ECSA Governing Council must lead by example. South Africa deserves professionally registered engineering leadership at the helm. #EngineeringLeadership #CEO #ChiefEngineeringOfficer #CityEngineers #IMESA2026

Engineers study engineering to solve problems and turn plans into infrastructure that serves society. As nominations open for the Fourth National Planning Commission (2027–2032), the engineering profession cannot remain on the sidelines. Self-nomination is not permitted. Let us nominate engineers and ensure engineering is finally at the strategic decision-making table. #AgendaForEngineering #NationalPlanningCommission #CallForNominations #SouthAfrica #NationalDevelopmentPlan
📢 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS | NATIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION Help shape South Africa’s future. Nominate a suitably qualified and experienced individual to serve on the Fourth National Planning Commission for the five-year term 2027–2032. The Commission will provide independent advice on South Africa’s development priorities and lead a participatory planning process towards a new long-term development plan beyond 2030. Nominations are encouraged from across society, reflecting South Africa’s diversity of expertise, experience and perspectives. 📅 Nominations are open from 26 October to 26 November 2026. Municipal infrastructure cannot be treated as ordinary administration. Water. Sanitation. Roads. Electricity. Waste. Technical leadership should be entrusted to appropriately qualified and competent engineers, technologists and technicians, with appropriate professional registration. #AgendaForEngineering #LGE2026

Most service failures are scheduled. Nobody just wrote them on the calendar. An industrial engineer reads a municipality like a production line. Every pump, valve, transformer and fleet vehicle has a working life, a failure pattern and a service interval. Ignore them and the breakdown arrives right on time. Before: fix it when it breaks, buy spares in a panic, residents wait for days. After: a current asset register, planned maintenance budgeted yearly, spares on the shelf, response times published. That takes planning, done by technicians, technologists and engineers who are allowed to plan. An Engineer-General could check that municipalities keep real maintenance plans and report on them in public. Water and power are rights, and maintenance is how engineers keep them working. Councillors, ask your technical team one question this week: show me the maintenance plan. @ChangingthingsS @SuperEngineerZA @SALGA_Gov #EngineerGeneralNow #ProfessionaliseTheState #PublicGood

When the bulk supply is turned down, the last house on the hill feels it first. Water does not simply arrive. It is pumped, stored and pushed uphill by pressure. Restrict the supply and a network is tested at its weakest points: reservoirs that drain overnight, pumps that cannot keep up, leaks that waste what little arrives. A mechanical engineer reads a dry tap as a pressure and storage problem, not only a supply problem. Civil, electrical and control engineers hold the other pieces of the same system. Rand Water's restrictions on Johannesburg and Tshwane are that test, live: nitter.cf/mailandguardian/status… An Engineer-General would ask before the next one: does every metro have the qualified people and maintained assets to share water fairly to every home? Water is a right. Engineers make it reach the tap. @ChangingthingsS @SuperEngineerZA @DWS_RSA #EngineerGeneral #EngineersMakeOurFutureWork #HumanRights

South Africa’s constitutional architecture has a missing seat: independent engineering oversight. An Office of the Engineer-General can help fill that gap, strengthening accountability and ensuring infrastructure delivers for the people. #ASeatAtTheTable #EngineerGeneral

A dark traffic light is not a broken bulb. It is a broken system. See a junction the way a control engineer does: - a signal controller that needs clean, backed-up power - detectors and cabling protected from theft and vandalism - timing plans updated as traffic grows - a maintenance plan signed off by a competent professional Fail one, and the whole junction fails. Pedestrians, taxis, ambulances and learners pay the price. Electronic, electrical, control and transport engineers, with technologists and technicians, make a safe crossing real every day. An independent Engineer-General would ask what no tender report asks: is the design right for our conditions, is maintenance funded, is the person in charge qualified? Safe movement is part of a dignified life. Let us engineer it that way. @ChangingthingsS @SuperEngineerZA #Ch9EngineerGeneral #EngineersForServiceDelivery #Jikizinto

@PublicProtector, the water crisis is an engineering matter. Please bring qualified engineers into investigations where infrastructure and service delivery are at the heart of the problem. Ultimately, a Chapter 9 Engineer-General should provide independent engineering advice to the Public Protector. #LGE2026 #water #engineering

JRA should organise an engineering hackathon to rethink traffic lights for our conditions: less resale value, stronger protection against vandalism and cheaper modular repairs. Involve SABS from the start. These repair costs warrant a serious design review.
Did you know? Repairing a single vandalised intersection can cost up to R740 000, while complex repairs can reach R1.9 million. This criminal activity drains millions from public funds every year - money that should be used build better communities, not replace stolen equipment.
