A new study shows that reducing VMT and investing in alternatives to driving is critical to reducing crash deaths. We lose hundreds of New Yorkers annually on our streets; it's time we take action and reduce the volume of traffic in our city. It's a matter of life and death

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

‘Fix the Bus,’ transit advocates say in new campaign to organize bus riders behind push for fast and free service amny.com/nyc-transit/fix-the…
When asked by Streetsblog why New Yorkers are able to park their private cars, but not their bikes, on the street for free, NYPD on the scene doubled down: “You can’t store personal property on the street."

"This year, 29 percent of all ticket sales on the commuter railroads were City Tickets, and ridership has increased by 478 percent at the Laurelton station in Queens and 503 percent at the Melrose station in the Bronx."
LIRR and Metro-North ridership surged within New York City limits after the MTA expanded $5 peak/$7 off-peak intracity fares in 2022 — driving the bulk of ridership growth on the two commuter railroads.

We lost a giant today. We owe so much to Dolores Huerta for everything she did to organize and politicize the working class.
Her legacy lives on every time a worker attends a union meeting, stands on the picket line or in solidarity with their neighbor, and speaks out against power — even if it’s within our own movements.

Years ago @MarkLevineNYC held hearings on NYC's toilet apocalypse: Insane costs, long timelines, few toilets
Then @hknightsf made national news on SF's "Million Dollar Toilet" scandal
Now NYC's toilets are hitting $7M. How do we fix subway procurement if we can't do toilets?
I FOILed for the number of closed public bathrooms in city parks. The data showed some have been shuttered so long the city couldn’t remember when they were last open. The total? 68. Some have no plans for repairs. The average cost? $5 to $7 million.

Hard to believe how much has changed in a decade.
When I was covering transit then, @MTA was mired in a maintenance spiral, cost overruns, and aging infrastructure. Expansion seemed like a luxury.
Now it has the most ambitious capital program in a generation, with a system improving each day.
Kathy Hochul is the first governor from upstate NY in about a century. She might also be New York City's biggest transit supporter in decades.

The @MTA says “legend has it that the 2,174-foot-long Manhattan Valley Viaduct, a massive steel bridge over a deep valley in Upper Manhattan, was built in just two weeks.” In the same newsletter it brags about a current project going thru five or six stages of review. Hello?

Many bus routes are legacy street car tracks from 100+ years ago. Updating routes to match how the city works now is good! Glad to see this was a success for Queens and I look forward to seeing Brooklyn's network redesign.
