Latest look at AR14566! Still an impressive looking region that should by all means be capable of interesting flares and eruptions. It's been a bit tempered thus far but that could change, especially if it sees more growth!

Remember that NAM memorial? About that… 📷 WOOF-NAM is now FREE in WeatherWise. It’s a 12 km version of the NAM that starts from GFS analysis and runs on GPUs, so its forecasts can differ from the original NAM. Open WeatherWise → Models → WOOF-NAM to check it out. No Pro subscription needed. Huge thanks to @recast for making the model data available!

Could not agree more with this for physical simulation!
The dogma of the last decade in computer vision is that all classical algorithms should be replaced by neural networks. This has been very productive but, counterintuitively, with the latest frontier models, I find myself sometimes turning back to classical methods. If you have the training data, the dogma still holds. But there are situations where data is hard to get, there exist good classical algorithms for solving a problem, optimization methods are just better, or where some simple code just does the thing you want. When writing code was time consuming and error prone, training everything made sense. Now, that a frontier model can code up and test solutions quickly, getting a solution through coding can be faster than gathering training data and training a model. Consequently, I think there will be more hybrid approaches that blend trained models and code. We now have generic, high-level, planners that can execute sequences of lower-level tasks to solve large problems. These lower-level tasks may be solved by a neural network, a classical method, or specialized code written on the fly. It never pays to be religious about technology. The future is probably hybrid. Pick the thing that works for you.

Context is necessary here: They just moved 19 sites that were launching at 18z to the 12z slot. I see no evidence of a recovery in the total number of launches.
There is more good news today. I had seen this a day or two ago but now it's confirmed by a notice sent out to Nat'l Weather Service offices directing them to resume timely 2x/day balloon releases. NWS has been on a hiring spree after the ill-advised DOGE cuts. (H/T Alan Gerard).

Turns out, more than a few people missed the NAM following its discontinuation. @recast and @DeepGuessr replicated its configuration, ported it to GPU, and are disseminating its data for free in real time - and it is now live on PolarWx: polarwx.com/models/?model=wo…
Turns out people really do love the NAM despite its flaws. We @recast have decided to continue to offer our WOOF-NAM 12km for free indefinitely (link below). It’s also important to understand that we are cold starting from GFS Analysis which naturally does slightly change model outcomes compared to starting from a native NAM analysis. Because of that, we will be running quite a few hindcasts of both popular and requested dates and model inits so people can compare. If anyone has any examples they’d like to see, I’ll run them and put it on the site. woof-nam.recastsystems.com/i…

NOAA retired the NAM this week. We ported it to the GPU and it's back, better than ever: WOOF-NAM, open source. - 12 km CONUS, all NAM physics, 24 h forecast in ~20 min on a single RTX 5090 (32 GB). - 8 GPUs: 6 h in 92 s. Multi-card is bitwise to single card. - 4 km CONUS, 24 h in under 9 min on 8 GPUs. 3 km nests anywhere on Earth (Europe, Japan, CONUS): 48 h in ~7 min on one card. SStarts from the NAM analysis or GFS today, IFS open data in the next release. Beside the operational NAM from the same cycle it's hard to tell them apart (pics). Today it needs one 32 GB card for the full 12 km CONUS; ~15 GB is the target, coming soon. github.com/recastsystems/woo…

if anyone has a reason why vals does not deserve to call itself an independent third-party evaluator please dm me so far as i can tell this is basically a legitimate claim
We have found a critical safety and alignment issue in recent public and internal models from multiple frontier labs which allows them to be misused in a high-stakes domain. It may also increase the risk of catastrophic misalignment. We have disclosed it to the labs, and they are investigating and mitigating it. As an independent third-party evaluator, we maintain complete editorial independence and will share our findings publicly in the coming weeks.

I actually tried doing running base difference difference imagery and holy cow it's beautiful (aside from the flashing RGB... trying to get rid of that). CME blast wave shows up SO well in this mode!
Lovely eruptive M3 flare earlier from this region. Nice seeing it cross the threshold and start producing M level flares now! It produced a CME but it isn't for us yet. Give it time!

Thanks to the great work done here, CSSL Weather Intelligence (weather.cssl.ca) is now able to provide the WOOF-NAM with 66 total fields (34 of them being post-processed by CSSL)!
NOAA retired the NAM last week. We thought it deserved to live on, so we ported it to the GPU and open-sourced it. We’re running the 12 km CONUS NAM ourselves, four times a day (00/06/12/18Z, 84 h, started from GFS), with the hourly files free for anyone: same awphys GRIB2 shape as NOAA’s, so an old NAM fetcher just needs a new host. woof-nam.recastsystems.com/i… The 12 km shape is in the WOOF API today, 5 km and 4 km CONUS this week, so you can run your own cycles any time from GFS or IFS.

Cancer patients with the same diagnosis often have very different tumor biology. Molecular testing can reveal underlying differences, but that's slow and expensive. Introducing Holon-S1, our platform to predict genes and biomarkers from routine pathology slides. • beats two other models at predicting spatial gene activity in a controlled comparison • has identified potentially novel biomarkers in breast cancer and colon cancer • evaluated across 16 organ types and more than 15 scanners, using slides from both formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded and fresh-frozen tissue. We believe Holon-S1 has the potential to help researchers find new biomarkers in slides they already have, discover treatment targets, and bring more personalized cancer care within reach!

Cost me 88 cents to run a 3-km WOOF (WRF) out to 24-hours with GPU accelerated from @recast Also, there's a 1-km nest over Tallahassee. You can adjust the model to your own specifications, region -- from U.S. to global. This was initialized at 18z with ECMWF open-data.
