Late stage capitalism:
A supermarket throws perfectly good food in the dumpster, pays its workers so little they can barely afford groceries, then asks customers to donate to the food bank at checkout.
And we're supposed to admire how fucking efficient this system is.
Ahead of Saturday's protest, as part of the Europe-wide Day of Action on Data Centres, Gerry McGovern finds that "AI’s devouring mouth doubles every day" – and "it wants more and more and more water..."

Due to housing, Irish 25-34 yr olds are 10* more likely than Danes to live in their childhood home, where household income is counted
As there are fewer actual young adult households, (lower average incomes=start of careers) the distribution seems more equal, but it's artificial
Income inequality has declined across the EU over the past decade. In Ireland it is now lower than Sweden and Denmark. This and more discussed in this week's column.

Government's proposed legislation is not a 'reform' of the Triple Lock, it is the *removal* of the Triple Lock.
There is only one side misinforming.
Every level of the trade union movement can become an Apartheid Free Zone: national offices, trades councils, individual branches.
We are calling on workers to put a motion to your next branch meeting. Declare your union branch an AFZ by 26 November #BDS

Wow! The Democrats won!
Their first order of business will certainly be to investigate and prosecute US officials responsible for complicity in genocide in Palestine, the crime of aggression in Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Nigeria, and Venezuela, the murder of boaters in the Caribbean, and the abduction of the Venezuelan president.
They will also dismantle the lawless, political militia known as ICE, end the persecution and harassment of human rights defenders opposing genocide on college campuses and in US cities and punish the perpetrators. The excesses of the AUMF and Patriot Act will be immediately repealed and our rights restored. Israel regime proxy control of US institutions will be ended and punished, the First Amendment restored, and universal healthcare will finally be provided as a human right.
Right? ……. Right??
Of course not. They are accomplices in the same criminal enterprise.
Sorry, I can’t make it to the party. I have to work.

The far right grows in the soil of neoliberal crisis. Yesterday in Leicester with @CWUnews ULRs we talked about why democratising economic knowledge matters. You can't challenge the far right without challenging the system that feeds it. ✊

Okay, another basic, incurious liberal - marvellous
Q: Were you ever a socialist?
Abdul El-Sayed: No. I'm too much of a scientist to actually believe in any sort of ideology.
I just don't do ideology. I'm a person of faith, and everyone else brings evidence.
The idea that you should have guaranteed healthcare in the country, anybody who tells you that's anti-capitalist is not really understanding how capitalism works.

Marxism isn’t an political system or an ideology that you have to follow blindly. It’s a way of understanding the world, processes of change, and the oppressive systems that we live under. That’s why the ruling class is terrified of it.

'Time and time again, people spoke of how the dominant narrative served to silence, to other, to label, to exclude and to stifle critical thinking.'
President Connolly's inauguration speech in which she called out that centre right reflex to label dissenting voices 'hysterical'.

He has become hysterical about what is a common-sense move by government to get rid of an anachronistic measure. The removal of the TL will have no impact on our neutrality. I can remember the 1972 referendum when our neutrality was said to be threatened by EEC membership. 54 years later, we remain militarily neutral.

"Crisis in the Middle East"? This is how EU institutions call the Israel-US aggression on Iran, Israel's full-on destruction of southern Lebanon and Israel's genocidal aggression against the Palestinian people?
EU citizens deserve better than lies, hypocrisy and war-mongering.

The UN is NOT "a grouping of states." It is a universal forum for global diplomacy and conflict prevention established by the UN Charter after World War 2, 'to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war' by working to maintain international peace through the peaceful resolution of disputes between states. It is *the* source of international legitimacy for peacekeeping operations.
A UNSC mandate means a peacekeeping mission conforms to the fullest extent possible with international law and is not being pursued over the objections of a superpower. A neutral country that wishes to remain neutral and avoid getting drawn into superpower rivalries should restrict itself to UN-mandated peacekeeping missions.
The EU is a regional bloc of states, attempting to assert itself as a geopolitical actor with strategic interests, increasingly by force projection. It isn't remotely the same thing as the UN. Increasingly, the EU's military missions are explicitly perceived as part of the EU's conflict with a superpower.
A MINIMUM test for ensuring an EU military mission is compatible with Ireland's neutrality is by requiring that it also enjoys a UN mandate before deploying to it. If it has no UN mandate, there is an unacceptable risk it is likely to make Ireland party to a conflict between superpowers, i.e. not neutral. A neutral country has no place becoming involved in such a mission.
The fact that the government has already announced its plans to involve Ireland in TWO such missions after the Triple Lock is abolished (EUNAVFOR Irini and EUSM Lebanon) is all the proof we need that FFG in government cannot under any circumstances be trusted to maintain our neutrality, and must be compelled to do so by force of law. The Triple Lock must remain in place.
Some people seem to think that a mandate for a mission that comes from the UN is inherently superior to one devised by the members of the European Union. That is not the case. The UN does not possess any unworldly wisdom. It is a grouping of states just like the EU. We should examine UN & EU mandates with the same rigour and work out what works best for us. We will have a bigger say in any EU mandated mission.
