Why are wages in Paris or NYC higher than in other cities?
In a new WP with @PaulineCarry & @BennyKleinman , we decompose spatial disparities btw “location effects” and the local composition of workers and establishments.
New data on firm mobility + double-mover design.
🧵⬇️
Data on firm relocations reveal that nearly all wage differences between cities stem from the spatial sorting of workers and firms; Location-specific factors explain only 2–5 percent, from @PaulineCarry, @BennyKleinman, and @ElioNimier nber.org/papers/w33779

France’s 35-hour workweek didn’t generate work-sharing: absent tax cuts, employment would have fallen 3.8%, concentrated among lower-skill workers. TFP rose 2%, output fell 1%, from @PaulineCarry, @cmontialoux, @ElioNimier, Alexandra Roulet, and @ninaroussille nber.org/papers/w35917

Is Portugal the most equal country?
Among GRID countries, it has the smallest gap between high and low earners.
P90 earnings are just 3.41 times P10 earnings.
But that headline hides a more complicated story. 🧵

New paper with P. Cahuc, F. Malherbet, @pmrsmartins
Employment protection (EPL) often depends on firm or establishment size and age.
These discontinuities are widely used to evaluate EPL with RD or DiD.
But what aggregate conclusions can we draw from such estimates? 🧵

*What role do firms play in geographic disparities?*
We develop a new approach to separate the role of workers, firms, and place effects.
Our approach: a double-mover design combining worker mobility and *establishment* relocation.

publication day of our new book with @augustinlandier !
We make an ultra-simple point: it is not possible to think about economics separately from moral values, and it's okay. We argue that moral tradeoffs are everywhere, and they must be confronted head-on.
In their new book, @HECParis professor @augustinlandier and MIT Sloan professor @dthesmar explore our desire to be good, the personal costs of being good, and the point at which people abandon goodness due to its costs. bit.ly/3HReJfs
