Ilhan Omar got more bad news on Thursday when a New York Times article revealed that the Obama administration had investigated her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi and found evidence it was fraudulent.
The FBI and Department of Homeland Security looked at the marriage in the summer of 2016. Officials told the Times that agents developed evidence suggesting it was a sham, possibly to help a man suspected of being her brother obtain a green card. Elmi received a provisional green card based on the marriage. When immigration officials later asked for more proof to make the status permanent, he left the United States and abandoned the petition instead of responding.
The case stalled because prosecutors concluded the potential felony of marriage fraud fell outside the five-year statute of limitations. Omar has spent years calling the claims a right-wing conspiracy that was debunked. A 2016 letter from the U.S. Attorney’s office saying it wasn’t investigating her at that moment was treated as clearance. The Times reporting shows law enforcement under Obama did examine it and saw enough to open a case.
Now both the Obama and Biden administrations have had her investigated on issues tied to her immigration history and related matters. She’s only avoided consequences so far because of technicalities like the statute of limitations. That doesn’t clear her. It just means the clock ran out on one potential charge.
Anyone who’s still defending Omar after these revelations shouldn’t be taken seriously. Just because her alleged crimes may have survived the statute of limitations doesn’t make her a better person. The gap between her public denials and what federal agents found under Obama is straightforward.
Omar really needs to resign. Continuing to protect her only makes the entire party look worse as the details keep coming out. Democrats have had years to move on from her and keep choosing not to.
These revelations about Omar are getting worse, and they’re making the Democrat Party look even worse than it already does for defending her. The evidence keeps accumulating while her explanations don’t. Around 40 House Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, already refused to sign a letter defending her. That’s quiet distancing in plain sight.
