SHE LOCKED HER LITTLE BOYS OUTSIDE - THEN TURNED AROUND AND WALKED BACK INTO THE FIRE. Not because she was trapped. Because four of her children were still inside. Just after midnight on September 3, 2019, Emma Schols woke to screaming in her family’s home in Edsbyn, Sweden. Her two youngest boys, Albin, 4, and Oliver, 3, had gone downstairs, where the television room was already engulfed in flames. By the time Emma reached them, black smoke was filling the house. She threw herself over her boys, shielding them with her body as she pushed toward the front door. When she opened it, the rush of oxygen fed the fire. Flames exploded toward them and Emma’s back caught fire. She still got both boys outside. Then she locked the door FROM THE INSIDE so her frightened little boys couldn’t follow her back in. Four of her children were still upstairs. The staircase was burning, but Emma climbed it anyway. The heat became so intense that the soles of her feet began peeling away. She later described the skin hanging “like threads.” “For each step I thought that this is not possible,” she recalled. But then she thought of the four children still upstairs and kept climbing. When Emma reached them, she discovered her children were fighting to survive too. Her 9-year-old daughter Nellie had jumped from the balcony to get help, while her 11-year-old son William had lowered a ladder to help his siblings escape. Then Emma counted. One was missing. Mollie. Her one-year-old baby was still inside. Emma was badly burned and exhausted. The house was disappearing into smoke and flames. Her children begged her not to go back. She went anyway. Emma crawled through the smoke searching for Mollie until she finally saw her little girl standing in her crib, crying. “I was so terribly tired but could see through the smoke how Mollie stood there in her crib and cried,” Emma later recalled. Somehow, seeing her baby gave her another surge of strength. Emma got to her feet, lifted Mollie from the crib and carried her to the balcony. William had the ladder ready. With Mollie on her hip and her own body catastrophically burned, Emma climbed down. When she reached the ground, she collapsed in the grass. All six children were alive. Not one was seriously injured. Their mother had taken the fire instead. Emma suffered burns over approximately 93% of her body. She spent about three weeks on a ventilator, endured more than 20 surgeries and faced months of rehabilitation. Before losing consciousness, she had promised her children she would come home. When Emma finally woke, her first question wasn’t about her burns or what her future would look like. “Are my children alive?” Every single one. Recovery was brutal. Emma had to learn to walk again and regain the use of her hands. Her appearance had changed so dramatically that some of her children were initially frightened. Mollie - the baby she’d crawled through fire to save - didn’t recognize her at first. But Emma kept her promise. She fought her way back, learned to walk again and eventually could hold her children again. In December 2020, Sweden honored Emma as Lifesaver of the Year. She later wrote about her recovery and learned to see her scars not as something to hide, but as part of the life she fought to keep. And when people wondered how a mother with burns covering almost her entire body could keep going back into a burning house, Emma’s explanation was simple: “If I gave birth to six children, I will get all six out.” There were six children in that house when the fire began. Emma Schols had decided there would still be six when it ended. Her body could burn. Her feet could give way. Her strength could disappear. But she wasn’t leaving one of her babies behind. Six children went into that night. Six children came out. And their mother carries the scars of what it took to make that happen.
