A wonderful ‘lunch with’ in @thetimes by @RobertMMiller1 in which he joins the incomparable @truemagic68 - the very definition of a City gent and someone it has been my privilege to know for more than 25 years.
Well worth a read.

BREAKING
* John Healey announces that £100 will be paid to 20million households in council tax bands A to D. That's much more generous than previously expected
* He confirms that the VAT cut on electricity bills will be extended to July
* Gas standing charges will be scrapped, similar reforms will follow on electricity bills
* He pledges to scrap green levies on energy bills
Amusing Freudian slip from chancellor, who says his energy secretary opposed Jackdaw, rather than approved it.
Think Gordon Brown's "we saved the world" slip was better though...

Early contender for quote of the budget:
"I come down, but only just, on the latter side of the argument. I remain a “Blackburn under Dalglish” man, rather than “Chelsea under Ranieri” as a preferred approach to supporting economic growth."
The dividing line ahead of this Budget appears to be between those who think in the current circumstances small changes - a do-no-harm fiscal event - is totally insufficient for the gravity of the economic challenges (defence spending, cost of energy, take home pay squeeze, cost of construction), and those who think less is more at a time when growth is solid and business investment is picking up.
I come down, but only just, on the latter side of the argument. I remain a “Blackburn under Dalglish” man, rather than “Chelsea under Ranieri” as a preferred approach to supporting economic growth.
Another day of pretty wild movements in bond yields. Look at France. Under more pressure from markets after riots over the weekend

A certain Rachel asked Nobel laureate Paul Krugman a question at Oxford last night, casually noting the IMF’s praise for UK deficit and debt reduction and the productivity puzzle being revised away. All during her time as Chancellor, as it happens. Laughter and applause.

It’s been a huge privilege to serve as @ARIA_research's founding Chair over the last four years. Having completed my first full term last month, I have decided to step down to ensure my new role at Anthropic doesn’t become a distraction from ARIA’s incredible work.
I have often said that ARIA is one of the things that makes me most optimistic about Britain. It’s a bold national experiment that’s paying off: ARIA has become a beacon for global talent and is building a portfolio of programmes - across neurotech, climate science, life sciences and more - that I have no doubt will change the world.
There’s lots to do, but I’m proud of the foundations the extraordinary team has built and so grateful to them for their work. I know that, under the leadership of our brilliant CEO Kathleen Fisher, ARIA will go from strength to strength. I will be excited to watch ARIA’s next steps and will remain the agency’s biggest fan.
The Secretary of State has asked me to stay on for a short transitory period until 6 November to allow BIST to launch a process to select a new Chair. I’ve agreed to do this, with appropriate safeguards against potential conflicts in place. We will kick off the search shortly - it may well be the best non-executive job in the world, so I know we will find someone brilliant...

My column on @demishassabis in The Times.
—Given his record of caring about AI safety and impact, people should err on the side of believing his own explanation for stepping back from management. When we spoke a lot last year, he gave me the sense that this moment might come.
—Gemini is behind for now, and several famous names have quit the AI research team. But Google has deep commercial strengths. And technical progress probably depends on young cutting edge researchers who are yet to be famous.

I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life, and as we enter this pivotal moment, I’m stepping into a new role as Chair of Google DeepMind & Chief Scientist of Alphabet. This will allow me to focus on long-term strategy, and accelerating scientific breakthroughs, including leaning into my work at Isomorphic to help cure disease.
I’m excited that @koraykv will be stepping up to lead GDM as SVP, alongside @joshwoodward and our exec team. I could not be more excited and confident about our amazing next chapter! 🚀

Not the words of Sabastian Sawe, but Sir Roger Bannister in 1954.
Running has always been about shoes and new technology.
