Field Marshal Saddam Haftar, son of and deputy to the commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army, arrived in Cairo on Sunday evening on a surprise visit aimed at containing Egypt’s publicly expressed displeasure over the Libyan House of Representatives’ approval of the controversial maritime agreement with Turkey. The visit comes at an extremely sensitive time, following the removal of Aguila Saleh as speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives and the election of Salah al-Din al-Namroush in his place. It also follows Egypt’s rejection of the Libyan parliament’s decision to recognize the agreement signed in 2019 by Fayez al-Sarraj, the former head of the Government of National Accord, with Turkey. Cairo understands that the decision was made with the green light from Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and his son Saddam, as part of their ambition to leverage Turkish influence in western Libya to facilitate the implementation of a power-sharing plan proposed by Massad Boulos, the US president’s senior adviser on Arab and African affairs. The plan calls for unifying the forces of eastern and western Libya into a single regular army and establishing a new governing authority that would give Saddam a presidential position, while Abdel Hamid Dbeibah would remain in office as head of the interim Government of National Unity. The plan requires securing Saddam’s peaceful entry into the capital, Tripoli, where Turkey maintains a military base and a significant intelligence facility. The visit comes amid publicly expressed Egyptian anger, conveyed by Egyptian Intelligence Chief General Hassan Rashad to Dbeibah in a telephone call on Saturday evening. Egyptian sources expect the newly appointed speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives to arrive in Cairo at a later date, on his first foreign visit since taking office. Egyptian communications have involved several Libyan parties, alongside coordination with Cyprus and Greece, which are also affected by the Libyan-Turkish agreement.

🏆 Best Veteran of the 2026 Season: Primož Roglič 🇸🇮 For me, there can only be one winner here: Primož Roglič! At 36, Roglič may no longer be the rider he was at his peak, but his end to the 2026 season was genuinely impressive. He finished second overall at the Vuelta a España, proving that he can still compete at the highest level. Even if Tadej Pogačar didn’t abandon the race, Roglič would have finished third, ahead of established names such as Felix Gall, Richard Carapaz, Sepp Kuss and Oscar Onley. That alone shows that Roglič still has plenty of quality and remains a strong contender in major stage races. He then went on to become European time trial champion. It's fair to acknowledge that Remco Evenepoel was absent, and that the course suited Roglič's characteristics. Nevertheless, he still had to deliver the performance, and he did exactly that. He may not be at his absolute peak anymore, but Roglič has proved that he still has what it takes to compete and win at the highest level. For me, he's the clear choice as the best veteran of the 2026 season. 👏

No, @elonmusk, the U.S. stopped funding Ukraine last year. In fact, U.S. companies make money on American weapons for which we Europeans pay. The more you meddle in our politics and the more you play politics with your products, the more you damage your brand.
Replying to @elonmusk
And some of that US taxpayer money comes back through multiple laundry machines to fund political campaigns in America, which is why you see some politicians caring more about Ukraine than America!

I deeply regret the ratification of the so-called ‘Libya - Türkiye maritime MoU’ by Libya’s House of Representatives. I would like to express my solidarity with Greece and Cyprus. This MoU infringes upon the sovereign rights of third States, does not comply with the Law of the Sea. It is null and void and cannot produce any legal consequences for third States. The sovereign rights of all Member States should be respected in accordance with EU and international law. consilium.europa.eu/en/press… @kmitsotakis @Christodulides @GreeceMFA @ckombos @CyprusMFA

🇪🇺 govt debt-to-GDP ratio is rising again, masking diverging dynamics. 🇫🇷🇧🇪🇫🇮 and increasingly 🇩🇪 are pulling it up. Conversely, 🇬🇷🇵🇹🇭🇷🇨🇾 and to a small extent 🇪🇸 pull in the opposite direction. Markets are attentive to this, hence different levels of contagion from 🇫🇷 sell-off.
