The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, co-chaired, with the United States, a high-level meeting of the Quad and Quintet on #Sudan, marking the first time the two coordination formats convened together. In his opening remarks, the Chairperson @ymahmoudali stressed that the meeting must translate into convergence & action. He underscored the gravity of the war, its growing regional spillovers & the burden on neighbouring countries hosting millions of refugees. He called for an immediate humanitarian truce & cessation of hostilities as a pathway to a durable ceasefire, reiterating that there is no military solution to the conflict. He stressed the need for an inclusive, Sudanese-owned & Sudanese-led political process leading to the restoration of constitutional order, while preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty & territorial integrity and rejecting fragmentation. The Chairperson also called for greater inclusivity in Sudanese dialogue, & urged an end to external military support fuelling the conflict. He emphasised that humanitarian, security & political tracks must advance in parallel and reinforce one another. Participants identified practical areas for follow-up calling for closer alignment of the political & security tracks, measures to reduce violence & protect civilians, & preparations for monitoring & verification of any agreement. They reaffirmed focus on ending the conflict, alleviating humanitarian suffering & supporting an inclusive Sudanese political process. They highlighted ongoing work on a humanitarian declaration & the need to address external military interference. The meeting called for stronger operational coordination between the Quad & Quintet, a shared roadmap linking humanitarian action, cessation of hostilities & civilian dialogue, & more regular coordination between technical teams. The Quintet stressed deeper engagement with Sudanese civilian constituencies & efforts to bring diverse civilian groups together around an inclusive political process. In his closing remarks, the AU Commission Chairperson called for the two platforms to move from convergence to systematic & operational coordination, helping overcome fragmentation. He identified three core priorities: humanitarian truce; cessation of hostilities; and an all-inclusive, Sudanese-owned dialogue. He commended the United States for its engagement with Sudanese stakeholders & recognised the tireless efforts of Senior Adviser Massad Boulos, while expressing appreciation for IGAD, UN, EU & other partners supporting efforts to bring peace to Sudan. The people of Sudan cannot afford further escalation. They cannot afford an international community that fails to deliver. My message at the @UN is clear: we must apply real pressure to secure a ceasefire and hold those who sustain this conflict accountable.
Drone warfare has opened a chilling new chapter in Sudan. Hospitals, aid convoys, and even nurseries have been struck by evermore lethal and indiscriminate attacks. The UK is pushing for civilians to be protected, and for those attacking them to be held to account.

A powerful moment - standing in the ruins of British Embassy Khartoum.

The @UN Security Council condemns the attack by armed individuals on a @unmissmedia force-protection convoy in Jonglei State, South Sudan, that killed two Ethiopian peacekeepers and injured seven others. Peacekeepers must never be a target.

In the UNSC, I urged the leaders, fighters, funders and fuellers of Sudan’s war to choose peace. Until they do, the Council can help protect civilians by strengthening the UN sanctions regime. The UK will continue providing humanitarian relief & supporting mediation efforts.
The war in Sudan has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. To help protect civilians, we must tackle arms flows that fuel the conflict. To that end, the UK supports strengthening the sanctions regime to respond to the war as it is being fought.

SUDAN: UN envoy Pekka Haavisto at the UN today during a press briefing: ➡️Says he spoke to RSF leader Hemedti by phone Friday on El Obeid: Says he told Hemedti "all the eyes of the world are now on" the city. Says Hemedti told him "his intention is not to harm the civilians." ➡️On why the UN is alarmed about El Obeid: "gathering of the troops, possible isolation of the city, which is full of civilians... our previous experience in Sudan and Darfur." ➡️On trusting Hemedti's assurance, given RSF sanctions & atrocity accusations: "Nothing can be said as a very sure issue... So far they are picking up our calls." ➡️On why the war drags on: both generals "still think that something can be achieved militarily." Haavisto says in his travels in the region meeting with key interlocutors since taking up his new position about 3 months ago, the view is different; No military solution.

El Obeid is on the precipice of an atrocity. Civilians must be protected and allowed to leave safely. We call on the RSF to halt its assault and on all parties to uphold international humanitarian law, ensure humanitarian access, and prevent further bloodshed.

I am deeply alarmed by the immediate and escalating risk of new atrocities in Sudan. We have pushed the UN Security Council to agree unanimously that the RSF assault on El Obeid must stop, that civilians must be protected, and that there will be no impunity for the perpetrators of war crimes. I’ve met survivors of previous atrocities, now camped at the Sudan border. We cannot let this happen again.
The @UN Security Council has expressed alarm at the risk of an imminent military offensive by the RSF on El Obeid. The Council demands the RSF immediately halt its assault. All parties must protect civilians and comply with their obligations under international law.

The UK underscores UNISFA’s vital role in protecting civilians and maintaining stability in Abyei. Sudan and South Sudan must re-engage in dialogue and take steps towards demilitarisation and agreed governance arrangements so UNISFA can carry out its mandate effectively.

At the request of the UK, US and France, the UNSC has sanctioned four more individuals fueling the conflict in Sudan: an RSF member and three individuals involved in recruiting mercenaries. Those perpetuating the ongoing conflict should be held accountable.

Three years on, Sudan faces the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. At the Berlin Conference, UK Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP pledged almost $200m in humanitarian aid to support those most in need. We continue to press at the @UN for an urgent ceasefire.
After 3 years of brutal conflict in Sudan, we need urgent action to end the death, the suffering, and the use of rape as a weapon of war. As we meet in Berlin for the Sudan conference today, the world’s worst humanitarian crisis must no longer be ignored. telegraph.co.uk/global-healt…

Excellent meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Cooper @YvetteCooperMP in Berlin. We reviewed areas of bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on our joint efforts to secure a humanitarian truce in Sudan, including through engagement at the UN. We agreed the belligerents must accept a humanitarian ceasefire to enable life-saving aid to reach those in need across the country and to pave the way for a durable peace.

Powerful words from my colleague Jocelyn @NatiqBritanee . Yesterday in Berlin wasn’t the day that Sudan’s tragic war ended, but it was progress - and every step counts.
