My talk at IIT Kharagpur, on why India will never be a “superpower” or indeed a major player: the systemic problems are too huge to overcome & politics fixation with micro patches means the macro is ignored youtu.be/outMIhNxFSA followed by the Q&A here youtu.be/jBiDlr_otLs

Captain Overage Activist This week, our journey into faux sociological terms continues. So far, yours truly has enamoured and enraged readers with three theories: the Higgins-Macaulay Complex, the Toaster Lover Syndrome and the Rang De Basanti Syndrome. For those who don’t ardently follow the Vine (shame on you), here’s a short recap: The Higgins-Macaulay Complex – named after Lord Macaulay, who wanted to create an English-speaking Indian second class, and Professor Henry Higgins, who was convinced the greatest thoughts flow only in Shakespeare’s tongue – is the misplaced belief that fluency in a colonial tongue, coupled with a sharp accent and arcane vocabulary, makes one superior in every way. The Toaster Lover Theory is the phenomenon created by the internet where people with absurd convictions find enough like-minded individuals to share their absurdity and start believing that the desire to perform coitus on an electrical appliance is normal behaviour and anyone who disagrees is a raging oppressive bigot. The Rang De Basanti Syndrome, named after the Dhurandar of the Left, is the anarcho-pacifist fantasy wrapped in the fig leaf of patriotism with the leitmotif of Rahman’s music that convinced folks that dreaming of revolution while protesting against the establishment automatically makes one morally superior, irrespective of whether one knows what one is protesting or has the slightest idea of what will happen after said revolution. Individually, anyone possessing any of these symptoms might be a danger to society, but put all three together and you get a full-blown version of an ailment that even Dr House cannot cure, because when all three intersect, we get the final boss archetype: Captain Overage Activist. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/…

White Media, White Tech: Deep State’s ‘Quiet Americans’ Helping White Handlers Implement ‘Regime Change’ Interesting but not surprising that the ‘official’ French news agency AFP was part of the Deep State’s regime change operation in Bangladesh. During the raucous Jantar Mantar ‘protests’ by a bunch of ‘regime change’ anarchists, an American newspaper, known as the proverbial cat’s paw of the US State Department, flew in a ‘journalist’ to cover the anarchy. The paper has been slashing budgets and sacking staff for lack of funds. Yet it flies in a person for a gully scrap? It’s always been like that. Old timers remember the Reader’s Digest story. Those of my generation fond of vodka would be embarrassed if reminded of their intimate association with Soviet era ‘Information Offices’ and ‘Cultural Centres’. More kebabs were consumed by journalists and bureaucrats at Pakistan High Commission than at Khan Chacha. But this is not about desis, it is about foreigners masquerading as ‘journalists’ on the payroll of certain White West Media orgs. Soon after relocating to Delhi to work at Vinod Mehta’s ‘The Pioneer’, a venerable senior colleague introduced me to a foreign journalist who was least interested in India and was totally into the separatist turmoil in Sri Lanka — she knew more about Prabhakaran than his grandmother and was on first name terms with the bosses of a pro-LTTE, Tamil Eelam-supporting party in Chennai. We could say the same thing about White Tech — it’s at the service of both State Department and Pentagon, servile to the Deep State and compliant with US ‘strategic interests’. For evidence look at Google’s role in the ‘Arab Spring’ violent Ikhwan protests directed at regime change. Nearer home look at Meta’s role in fomenting, mobilising, activating and organising the Jamaat-Hizbut Tahrir violent regime change protest in Bangladesh. In Nepal and Sri Lanka both Google and Meta played a dominant role. We have just learned that Elon Musk increases or decreases the Internet speed of Starlink as per DC’s instructions. SWIFT has been suspended for Russia to punish Moscow. Barring honourable exceptions, and I quite admire their integrity, foreign ‘journalists’ deployed in India (and other countries) are mostly ‘Quiet Americans’ — instigators, messengers, informants, disruptors — they are chosen, deployed, weaponised and used by the Deep State. (Read ‘The Quiet American’ by Graham Greene.) @deepscribble @AninBanerjee @albd1971

Can I just add: Dobermans and Rottweilers are also like this. Sweet, calm, loving & gentle. A “ferocious” dog is a badly brought up/abused/neglected dog. Mine are Desis and the only time they got their fangs out and lips curled is when a delivery guy started talking in a high pitch they perceived as aggressive.
As someone who has had GSDs as pets and loves them to pieces - its my favorite breed, let me say this - An aggressive GSD is a badly reared and kept GSD. GSDs are noble souls who have only one objective in their lives - to protect and safeguard their pack (that is you and your family). Having GSDs is as good as having another human being in your life. They understand what you say in plain language (mines understood Pahari/Kangri), they are sensitive to your mood swings and they practically speak with their eyes. And they need lots of hugs and cuddles. No unnecessary barking or creating ruckus. People think of them as attack dogs. They're not. They don't pick petty fights. They are calm and gentle as if they know their power. They are almost saint like in their demeanour. I mean, lot at the gentle soul in the video - sitting their all calm and composed listening to her rant. And that deep sigh - he's like, Bas Kar Behen 😁 They will silently watch over their flock (you and your family) and its assets. God forbid if someone tries to cross this boundary - because the gentle soul that you're used to becomes absolute terror. They are fearless and will take a bullet for you. Oh man! How I miss my dogs!

No surprises here. Piketty & co try to recycle Marx like every generation of leftist “economists” since the 1870s. Same drivel - new jargon.
I've been pointing out since the early 2010s that Thomas Piketty, Emmanuel Saez, and Gabriel Zucman have a bad habit of biasing their data construction to fit their politics. Whenever they make a suspect call in how to handle stats, it ends up showing that inequality is on the rise. They almost never go in the other direction. The errors are non-random and almost invariably reinforce their political claims about rising income and wealth concentration since 1980. Piketty did this throughout his book Capital in the 21st Century. Piketty and Saez did this throughout their famous 2003 paper on inequality in the US. Piketty, Saez, and Zucman Saez and Zucman did this in their Distributional National Accounts paper that Auten and Splinter dissected. Saez and Zucman did this in their 2019 book on tax incidence and inequality. Saez and Zucman did this in their flurry of "studies" and white papers to support Elizabeth Warren's wealth tax proposal, California Prop 40, a new wealth tax in France, and dozens of other similar examples. A new AI report (linked below) audited 138 papers by Saez and Zucman. It found thousands of errors, 194 of which were serious. A whopping 97% of the serious errors went in the same direction: they showed inequality rising faster or made it higher. But there's a bigger scandal at play here. Despite these clear biases, Piketty, Saez, and Zucman have enjoyed a stream of praise and prestige within the economics profession. They get expedited and friendly reviews in top econ journals even though a more serious peer review should have caught many of these errors (the Quarterly Journal of Economics is a recurring offender in this regard). Journals regularly give them a pass after the errors in their old work come to light - they're never expected to correct any of it, and just keep on using it as if nothing changed. Their non-peer reviewed data claims are also treated as gospel by major media outlets such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. And they get showered with prizes - Saez and Zucman are both Clark Medal winners from the AEA, and Zucman got his prize in 2023 after evidence of major data shenanigans in his work came to light in 2019. Until now, those of us who have been trying to correct the record have had to wade through the PSZ trio's cluttered, disorganized, and often non-transparent replication packages (almost all of which are convoluted piles of Excel spreadsheets) to find the problems. I did a line-by-line replication of Piketty and Saez's entire 2003 US income inequality series to use one example, and found it was riddled with errors - almost every single one of which biased their results in favor of their political story. We had the means to catch this stuff as it was happening, but the economics profession failed to do its job. And it failed precisely because its elite ranks wanted to believe the Piketty-Saez-Zucman story for political reasons.

I would appeal to all to oppose the Draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Control and Supervision of Experiment, Breeding and Trading of Laboratory Animals) Rules, 2026. The draft rules, circulated by the Centre, will allow capture and use of wild animals—including endangered or protected Show More species under vague "scientific justification”. The draft rules also permit experiments on community and free-ranging stray dogs and cats. The rules also accommodate extreme procedures, like electric shocks, prolonged isolation of animals like dogs and monkeys and induced tumors Animal lovers have opposed this. PETA India has demanded withdrawal of these draft rules. One thing is clear. Change in animal lab testing rules will encourage cruelty to animals. If ethics panel gets the powers for granting approval to such lab experiments, nobody can stop it. During lab tests, animals undergo insufferable pain, but they cannot express it like humans. Rabbits, rats, monkeys and dogs are kept in small cages in labs, they are given needle pricks regularly. Since they are animals, no consent can be taken. The ideal condition is: use of animals in lab trials must be kept to the bare minimum and care must be taken that the animals do not suffer pain. As far as possible, non-animal testing should replace animal testing, but the new draft rules will put the clock back. In many countries animal testing is difficult and costly, and India may be used as the place at cheap costs. This is dangerous. We should register our objections over these new draft rules. Since November 5 is the deadline, I would appeal to all to scan the relevant QR code to register your objections.

As a neurosurgeon, let me tell you how frightening this injury actually is - an occipital compound depressed skull fracture treated with a WIDE craniotomy (outer staple line). What's scary isn't the fracture; it's what's adjacent to the damaged skull. The axe blows (that tree-branch scar at the center) hit right over the posterior superior sagittal sinus, a large vein that runs lengthwise between the 2 cerebral hemispheres and carries blood from the brain to the heart. Penetrating injuries to the sinus can carry upwards of a 40% morbidity/mortality - partially because a transection of the sinus can be difficult to repair and can result in extreme blood loss, venous air embolism, or thrombosis - all of which can be fatal. There's scary, and then there's the "you go to elevate the fracture and risk unroofing the sinus, losing 2 liters of blood in a minute" scary. The surgeons likely had their hands full and did an amazing job. Divine providence called many heroes into service that day. Damn fine work. धन्यवाद

Stop calling the N*zi symbol a “Swastika”!
The N*zi symbol is a Hakenkreuz (HAH-kuhn-kroyts), not a Swastika. The Swastika is a sacred symbol for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. We should not allow it to be hijacked and desecrated by evil people any more than we would allow the ✝️ or ✡️ to be appropriated by evil people.
