If you only expect children to be either good with their hands, or academic, don’t be surprised when they believe you. One of the worst snobberies. ‘My children will read The Iliad. *Those* children can learn how to mend my bathroom tiles.’ Tiling is fine. Literature is fine. But no child has either burned into their DNA. Their stories are written as they write, not before they were born.

Really important new study: what learning strategies do successful students use? Key points:
▶️ Techniques backed by cognitive research, like elaborative study and retrieval practice, are positively correlated with student achievement.
▶️ Despite the effectiveness of techniques like retrieval practice, they are among the least used. Rote learning remains common, possibly due to its effectiveness for short-term success in examinations.
▶️ Higher use of effective study strategies correlates with positive beliefs, such as self-efficacy and growth mindset.

I'm sorry but I just can't make myself care about student books.
If I've got 15 minutes and the choice between making them go through and tag in sheets and underline dates and titles, or teaching them something, I'm going to choose the latter every. single. time.

Volvo posted a 3 min and 46 second ad on Instagram, shot by Hoyte Van Hoytema, the cinematographer of Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
It goes against every single rule you can think about as a social lead. Length. Format. Over-produced.
Every comment under the ad said it immediately put Volvo in their consideration set. It's fucking fantastic.

Very kind words from another teacher on Twitter who I have a great deal of respect for!
If you have colleagues who aren't aware of sciencedoctor.school.blog then do share it. Great to continue hearing feedback on the KS3 books too - if you've used them with students, let me know!

I have had one for a while, great work.
Last day of half term, saw my 2 physics colleagues walk by with 1 each...got me excited and had a 15 mins conversation about them and showed them your site as well, that got them super excited also 😊

We’re consulting on the continued use of formulae and equation sheets in 2025, 2026 and 2027.
This follows @educationgovuk’s decision that students don’t need to memorise formulae and equations for GCSE maths, physics and combined science.

Physics teachers. Here are 3 Newton's 3rd Law demos which hopefully will result in clarity for students on what is often a challenging topic. All that is needed are 2 sets of luggage scales. Credit to Tony Reeves for this fab idea 👏👏👏👏

Schools that expect little from students but everything from staff are a drain on the profession.
'Teachers - Do this incredibly long list of tasks + we will monitor you to death'
'But a lot of students are rude/disrespectful/passive all the time'
'Your teaching mustn't be up to it then'

I'm trying to get my students into good habits with their @Carousel_Learn homework - to not race through the flashcards - so I'm trying the following instructions, and so far the students seem to be engaging with the flashcards much better and doing less cramming!

ALT Task description 1. Go to this link: Homework. Your log in is your name. 2. Spend at least 15 minutes going through the flashcards. For each question, either write down the answer, or speak it aloud (whispering is fine!) 3. No earlier than the following day, repeat step 2. 4. No earlier than the following day, complete the quiz. If you score below 80%, immediately revisit the flash cards. Repeat the quiz the following day. For example: Thursday - 15 minutes flashcards Sunday - 15 minutes flashcards. Tuesday - quiz. 80%+, homework done. <80%, 15 minutes flashcards Wednesday - quiz.
