Big day for @formationbio as we announce our $600M Drug Development Accelerator Fund. Unique among funds in that it's directed toward our core internal programs, complementing our balance sheet capital and deep drug development capabilities. Learn more below:
Today we’re announcing the $600M Formation Bio Drug Development Accelerator Fund. @lintaho and I started @FormationBio because we believed the biggest bottleneck in bringing new medicines to patients wasn’t drug discovery, but drug development. As AI dramatically accelerates discovery, that bottleneck is only becoming more acute. Without the capital and capacity to advance promising drugs through clinical trials, much of that progress won’t translate into medicines for patients. Our new Fund brings together dedicated capital, drug development expertise, and AI-powered development capabilities to acquire promising drugs and advance them through the clinic.

At the #NORDSummit, @CNBC's @BeckyQuick moderated a dialogue with the CEOs of NORD, @BioMarin, @JazzPharma, @OtsukaUS in which she challenged each of them to state their "wish list" for removing barriers to care for rare disease patients. Here were some of their answers: • Cohesive patient data sets powered by foundations and advocacy groups • More funding for organizations like #NORD to sustain that infrastructure • Expanded newborn screening for rare, genetic conditions • Improved medical awareness and education • Diagnostic codes for more rare diseases • More regulatory flexibility and fit-for-purpose standards for highly heterogenous diseases • Consistency and predictability across #FDA review teams • Exemptions from tariffs for orphan drug manufacturing The overarching theme was that, to scale up #RareDisease research and treatment development, we need laws and regulatory policies that address the challenges patient communities and #biotech companies are facing, a #healthcare system with improved diagnostic capabilities, and well-funded patient organizations who can lead research efforts in their communities, in partnership with industry companies.

Biopharma M&A reached $173B through Q3 2026, but quarterly value fell 48% from Q2’s peak. Big deals can lift sentiment, and the XBI, without improving conditions for every biotech. #XBI #Biotech
22
Nine biotech IPOs in Q3 2026-a five-year high, raised $2.4B, down from $3.8B in Q2. More listings don’t mean easy capital; XBI can’t capture the full funding picture, especially for early-stage firms.
19
XBI can rise while many biopharma companies remain under pressure. In September 2026, 86 U.S.-listed biopharma companies traded below cash, nearly 4× the pre-COVID average. XBI doesn’t show each company’s runway. #Biotech
20
XBI is a useful public-market barometer, not a full biotech health check. Up roughly 21% YTD as of Oct. 19, yet 11% below its August peak, it doesn’t capture private funding, runway, clinical progress or hiring. #Biotech

One of the nuanced differences in Executive Search between nonprofits and industry. Industry partners know when to use outside expertise, their question is which firm do I chose.... Nonprofit organizations often just do not believe in the value, and it can show by performance.

Q4 and early 2027 hiring continues year-round. Search firms bring comp insight, protect confidentiality, maintain momentum, and negotiate Q1 bonuses, buyouts & equity. Partners through the calendar, not just CVs. #Hiring

Rejuvenate Bio spun out of my lab at Harvard, and I co-founded it. One injection reverses cardiac disease in dogs, with three years of safety data and zero safety issues. They’ve raised $3.2M+ and 1,250+ investors are in, and Kingscrowd ranks the round #1 in the country. It closes soon: wefunder.com/rejuvenatebio

Swallowing dysfunction in #DM1 can develop gradually. Signs may include difficulty chewing, coughing or choking when eating, food “sticking” in throat, longer meals, or weight loss. In some cases, there’s a risk of food or liquid entering the airway. Recognizing symptoms early supports safer eating. #DM1SymptomSpotlight #MyotonicDystrophy

When cash is tight, equity can support year-end hiring and retention, but only when benchmarked and explained transparently. It cannot replace clear strategy or competitive fundamentals. #ExecutiveSearch #LifeSciences

Senior hires shouldn’t absorb the cost of moving. Negotiate a make-whole package before the offer for forfeited Q1 bonuses or unvested equity, often 80–100% via a bridge bonus, replacement equity or salary adjustment.
13
Bonus season (Oct 1–Mar 31) can make senior hiring seasonal: candidates wait for Q1 2027 payouts, October/November slates look thin, and February/March gets crowded. Plan bonus, equity and search timing deliberately.

As a search firm that focuses on rare disease drug development on both the industry in the nonprofit side, we look forward to supporting our partners as they drive their therapies into the hands of those who need them most.
This is big news and outstanding progress for patients. While Rare Disease are now getting long overdue attention, the focus needs to stay on the ecosystem for the long-term.
