AEPAC Statement Supporting Congressional Call for Urgent U.S. Diplomatic Action in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) expresses its full support for the letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio by members of Congress concerning the deteriorating security situation in Ethiopia and the growing risk of a wider regional conflict in the Horn of Africa. Taking into consideration the prolonged war in the Amhara region, the renewed war in Tigray, continued armed conflicts across other parts of Ethiopia, and the recent formation of the Alliance for Survival (AFS), AEPAC shares the serious concerns expressed by the congressional leaders regarding the escalating hostilities throughout Ethiopia, rising tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the potential involvement of regional actors, and the grave humanitarian consequences of further conflict. The escalating crisis underscores the urgent need for sustained U.S. diplomatic leadership, coordinated regional engagement, the protection of civilians, and a credible, inclusive, and sustainable peace process. Unresolved political and security challenges, regional tensions, and the risk of further armed conflict threaten to deepen instability and cause additional humanitarian suffering. Preventing a wider regional war must be an immediate priority. AEPAC therefore endorses the recommendations in the congressional letter and urges the U.S. Department of State to take the following actions: 1. Appoint and empower a Senior Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa. Provide the envoy with sufficient authority to engage directly with the leadership of Ethiopia and Eritrea at the presidential level and coordinate diplomatic efforts with the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations (UN). 2. Press for an immediate ceasefire and a renewed peace process. Urge all parties to halt hostilities and pursue an inclusive, sustainable political settlement supported by independent monitoring and an effective dispute-resolution mechanism. 3. Prevent an interstate war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Engage both governments directly at the highest diplomatic levels, press them to honor their commitments under the 2018 Jeddah Agreement, and warn Egypt, Sudan, and Gulf partners against providing military assistance or other support to armed proxies that could intensify the conflict. 4. Mobilize Gulf and regional partners to advance de-escalation. Work with countries across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as other influential regional actors, to coordinate diplomatic efforts, reduce tensions, and halt the supply of drones and other weapons used in attacks that endanger civilian lives. 5. Ensure humanitarian access and restore emergency response funding. Press the Government of Ethiopia to guarantee unfettered humanitarian access to all populations in need, restore essential emergency response funding, and provide Congress with detailed information on humanitarian assistance committed to Ethiopia since September 23, 2026. 6. Protect civilians and strengthen accountability. Urge all parties to uphold international human rights standards and applicable international humanitarian law, support meaningful accountability for those responsible for war crimes and other serious human rights violations, and provide protection and assistance to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. Civilians and affected communities must also have a meaningful role in peacebuilding and reconciliation. 7. Reinstate targeted sanctions and visa restrictions. Apply these measures consistently against individuals on all sides who are responsible for atrocities or whose actions contribute to escalating violence and regional instability. 8. Rebuild U.S. diplomatic and analytical capacity in the region. Strengthen sustained diplomatic engagement, regional expertise, and early-warning capabilities, and provide regular briefings to Congress on the administration’s strategy to prevent further conflict in Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa, and the broader region. Preventing a wider war in the Horn of Africa is far less costly—in human, economic, and strategic terms—than managing its consequences after escalation. Further conflict would place additional civilian lives at risk, deepen displacement and humanitarian suffering, threaten regional security, and undermine stability across an already fragile region. The United States has an important role to play in supporting preventive diplomacy, encouraging regional cooperation, protecting vulnerable populations, and advancing a credible and sustainable path toward peace. Such efforts should be guided by respect for human rights, accountability, sovereignty, and the legitimate aspirations of the peoples of the region for security, dignity, and lasting stability. AEPAC urges the Department of State to respond with the urgency this crisis demands and supports the congressional leaders’ request for a briefing on the Department’s strategy no later than November 30, 2026. The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee reaffirms its commitment to peace, civilian protection, and lasting stability in Ethiopia and throughout the Horn of Africa. We call on U.S. policymakers and regional partners to act decisively and diplomatically before the current crisis escalates into a wider and more devastating regional war. 60 Orthodox Christians massacred in Ethiopia. A report buried on a website is not enough. Where is the sustained outrage and interest from the legacy media? Why is Christian persecution so easy to look away from?

Over 40 Orthodox Christians massacred in Ethiopia. Homes burned, churches targeted, mass burials. Almost total silence from Western media and “human rights” groups. When the victims are Black African Christians, the outrage disappears.

While the US & Western partners provide substantial aid (~$850–920M US in FY2025) + IMF/World Bank support to Ethiopia, PM Abiy Ahmed’s government-cited in the US State Dept’s 2024 human rights report for extrajudicial killings, civilian drone strikes, and other abuses-has just received 12 Russian Su-35 fighter jets and plans to acquire S-400 systems. Does funding a government buying advanced Russian arms while facing these documented issues align with promoting democracy and human rights? #AmharaGenocide @UNGeneva @UN_HRC @UNHumanRights @EU_Commission @EUCouncil @realDonaldTrump @StateDept @SecRubio @SenateForeign @HouseGOP @HouseForeignGOP @HouseForeign @POTUS

.@KremlinRussia_E why👉🏾 “Criminal militias and a complicit government. And innocent victims.. But the image of this child will continue to rebuke the consciences that have fallen asleep and condemn the mouths that remained silent.” #Distance #Reject @AbiyAhmedAli @PMEthiopia
The whole world lies under the sway of the evil one. The Ethiopian child, who may not speak very well yet and still leans on his mother’s arm when he walks, was killed in cold blood because he was wearing a cross around his neck... And because his family is Ethiopian Orthodox. Dozens have been killed this week in the Oromia Region, and no one intervenes to stop the massacres, no one shows sympathy, and no one speaks out. Criminal militias and a complicit government. And innocent victims... But the image of this child will continue to rebuke the consciences that have fallen asleep and condemn the mouths that remained silent. God is present. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. عضمة زرقا by. We stand in solidarity with our Ethiopian Orthodox brothers.

The level of savagery in this video is simply unparalleled; celebrating drone strikes that killed Amhara babies, mothers, and schoolchildren, they represent a moral disgrace. This woman could easily have stepped out of the pages of the carnage and bloodbath described by the great Ethiopian monk Abba Bahrey. Remarkable that someone living in Europe could speak with such apparent delight about the decimation and immolation of innocent women and children simply because they are #Amhara. I would never wish such suffering upon anyone, let alone my own country, any woman, any child, or any civilian anywhere on the face of the Earth. That is the fundamental moral difference between those who celebrate violence in the name of Abiy Ahmed and those of us who refuse to surrender our humanity. No political allegiance can justify celebrating carnage. #AmharaGenocide @UN_HRC

News: More than 50 detained after burying victims of deadly attacks on #Orthodox faithful in #Ethiopia’s #Oromia Addis Abeba — More than 50 residents in #Shirka Woreda, Southeast Zone (formerly #Arsi zone) of #Oromia region, have reportedly been detained after burying victims of recent attacks and assisting the wounded, residents told Addis Standard, raising concerns about a security crackdown in the aftermath of the killings. The detention followed attacks by armed men in Chole and Birbo kebeles that left at least 48 people dead and more than 31 others injured, according to residents who spoke to Addis Standard. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church’s #Holy_Synod subsequently reported that 60 Orthodox Christians were killed in attacks on 20 and 24 October across two woredas in Arsi Zone. Attempts by Addis Standard to contact the regional communication bureau for further comment were unsuccessful. addisstandard.com/?p=60704

At least 60 Christians, five of them children, have been killed in two separate attacks by armed groups in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. The first attack, on October 20, 2026, left 14 people dead in the Merti district. Four days later, on October 24, another 46 were killed in the Shirka district. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church says more than 20 people were seriously injured and at least 20 homes were set on fire. Regional authorities have pointed the finger at rebels linked to the Oromo Liberation Army, though the group’s involvement is still being disputed.

Very serious concerns over reported attack on Christians in which, as reported by @BBCBreaking, “more than 60 people have been killed in a series of attacks on Christians in Ethiopia's Oromia region, according to the country's Orthodox Church.” In a statement posted on Facebook, our sister Ethiopian Orthodox Church said that “it had repeatedly raised concerns about insecurity with authorities at different levels of government, but that ‘so far there has been no solution’". We pray propose for the departed, comfort for the bereaved, healing for the injured and traumatised, peace upon the region and the nation, and wisdom for those who lead. @Refcemi
