Debates matter, which is exactly why who gets on stage matters.
WMUR introduced Wednesday's NH-02 debate as a "rematch," and in the full hour my name never came up once. There are three certified candidates on the NH-02 ballot this year. Calling it a rematch didn't just leave me off the stage. It told voters the race only has two choices.
In 1992, Ross Perot was invited to all three presidential debates. He didn't win, but he got nearly 19% of the vote and helped make the deficit an issue both parties had to answer for. The budget was balanced by the end of the decade. In 1996 he was kept off the stage, and his support fell by more than half.
Independents bring issues to the table that the two parties would rather avoid, but only if voters get to hear them.
