The First U.S. State Capital Declares Ahmad Shah Massoud Day
On the 25th anniversary of the martyrdom of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the National Hero of Afghanistan, the Massoud Foundation USA is proud to announce that Sacramento, California has become the first state capital in American history to proclaim September 9, 2026, "Ahmad Shah Massoud Day."
I thank Mayor McCarty and the people of California for honoring him. Twenty-five years after his death, Massoud still gives the people of Afghanistan hope and an example to follow. His memory lives in the resistance to the Taliban and in ordinary people across society, inside the country and in exile.
It says something that a country as divided as ours, with all its rifts and competing agendas, can still pause and come together around one man. His worth was never fully cherished inside Afghanistan while he lived, nor by the international community until it was too late.
Commander Massoud, our beloved Amer, fought a lonely war against international terrorism and was the first victim of 9/11. His fight was never for Afghanistan alone. He fought to keep Al-Qaeda and the Taliban from reaching innocent people far beyond our borders, from New York to the capitals of Europe.
After warning the European Parliament and Washington that a massive attack on the United States was being planned, he was assassinated two days before 9/11. He had written, "I don't know how much longer I can hold out against them… If they kill me, then you know they are coming. That will be your signal." Two days later, the world received that signal.
Since the takeover in 2021, the Taliban have desecrated his tomb again and again. Even his dust unsettles them. They know Massoud was more than a man. He remains an idea. As he said, "I see a day where guns will be locked in arms depots, and pens will be put to use… That day is not too far off, and I see it coming." The people of Afghanistan will see that day for him, God willing.
Though the Taliban have banned any celebration of him, Ahmad Shah Massoud Day is now marked quietly in homes across Afghanistan, and openly in more cities and on more continents than at any time in the past 25 years, from diaspora gatherings to academic conferences.
The following cities have formally declared and celebrated Ahmad Shah Massoud Day, along with places that have named roads and alleys in his honor.
Sacramento, California (the first state capital to declare)
San Diego, California (four times)
Westminster, California
Frankfurt, Tennessee
Elma, Washington
McKinneyTexas
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Paris, France (Allée du Commandant Massoud)
Reims, France (street named for Ahmad Shah Massoud)
Nice, France
Soon it will be on every continent.
Massoud's spring has yet to blossom.

It is a profound honor to announce that the City of Sacramento, under the leadership of Mayor @KevinMcCartyCA, has officially proclaimed September 9, 2026, as “Ahmad Shah Massoud Day,” marking the 25th anniversary of the martyrdom of the late Ahmad Shah Massoud, who was assassinated by Al Qaeda on September 9, 2001, just two days before the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Sacramento is the capital of California, the most populous state and home to the largest state economy in the United States. It is also home to one of the largest concentrations of Afghanistan’s diaspora community in the country, making this recognition especially meaningful.
@YusufDNazar, CEO of the Massoud Foundation USA, together with the Foundation’s leadership, expresses our deepest gratitude to Mayor McCarty and the officials of the City of Sacramento for this historic recognition and for honoring the enduring legacy of the late Ahmad Shah Massoud, a symbol of freedom, democracy, and the struggle against extremism and terrorism. @AhmadMassoud @awmasoud @alinazary @sacbee_news

We are deeply honored that Nice, following Paris and Reims, will honor the late Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, the National Hero of Afghanistan, by naming a place after him. His legacy remains a symbol of freedom, courage, and the struggle against extremism and terrorism.
On the 25th anniversary of his martyrdom, this meaningful tribute reminds us that his sacrifice and the values for which he stood transcend borders. His struggle for a free, democratic, and pluralistic Afghanistan continues to inspire the people of Afghanistan and all those who stand for freedom.
We extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mayor Éric Ciotti for his profound friendship, his unwavering support for the freedom-seeking people of Afghanistan, and his commitment to preserving the legacy of our National Hero. France’s solidarity with our people has always held a special place in our hearts.
Mr. Ahmad Massoud and I look forward to visiting Mayor Ciotti in Nice very soon and thanking him personally for this meaningful gesture of friendship and solidarity.

The Enemy Has No Endurance.
The original photo that inspired this piece was taken by Stephen DuPont in 1998 in Faizabad, Badakhshan, as Commander Massoud spoke to his troops on the frontline. DuPont described it as one of his favorites:
“I saw intensity in his eyes that I hadn’t seen before and I wanted to capture this gaze. With the cracked windscreen the photograph just came together beautifully.”
We agree.

Exactly five years ago today, on March 27, 2021, Mayor @Anne_Hidalgo and NRF Leader @AhmadMassoud unveiled the Allée du Commandant Massoud in the heart of @Paris to honor the late Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud and mark the centenary of France Afghanistan relations. This act of friendship and solidarity will never be forgotten by the people of Afghanistan. We remain deeply grateful to the French nation, especially the City of Paris. During our recent visit to France last week, we renewed our commitment to this special relationship in our final meeting with Mayor Hidalgo at the historic Hôtel de Ville.
We also extend our sincere congratulations to Mayor @egregoire on his election as the new Mayor of Paris. As in the past five years, we remain committed to preserving and strengthening this meaningful bond between us and the City of Paris under your leadership.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend Sandy Gall, a distinguished British journalist, author, and steadfast friend of Afghanistan. He was not only a close friend of the late Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud and his family, but also the author of Commander Massoud’s biography, drawn from the Commander’s own diaries and personal accounts. His work preserved the legacy of Afghanistan’s National Hero for the world to witness.
@AhmadMassoud and I had the honor of meeting him for the last time this past February in Kent. It was a profoundly emotional encounter, filled with reflection, warmth, and shared memories. We did not know then that it would be our final meeting. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support for the people of Afghanistan left a lasting impression on both of us. We are privileged to have called him and his family our dear friends.
On behalf of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan and its leader @AhmadMassoud, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Gall family. We honor Sandy Gall’s remarkable legacy, his voice for freedom, and his tireless advocacy for Afghanistan. May he rest in eternal peace.

I want to thank @ShawnRyan762 for all the work he does to bring attention to GWOT veterans and to Afghanistan, including the petition he started to urge more attention for Ahmad Massoud, Jr. and the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan’s fight for their people.
My team and I have been in consistent communication with Mr. Massoud and his team at the NRF for many years. The Taliban’s terrorist regime has destroyed any progress made on human rights in Afghanistan and I am committed to opposing their rule and supporting the will of the Afghan people. The NRF's mission is an honorable one, and Mr. Massoud will be featured in @HouseForeignGOP's report on our Afghanistan withdrawal investigation that will be released on September 9th. I will once again be meeting with NRF representatives, including Ahmad Massoud, Jr, on September 10th, and I look forward to hearing about his efforts to free his people from the Taliban.
Veterans have done so much for our country, and they deserve to be listened to by their elected leaders. I want to make sure they know that now, and always, their voices are heard by me.
