The argument that we can’t exempt overseas care workers from retrospective settlement extensions because they might leave the sector is not just wrong. It’s cruel.
We should not be keeping care workers in the sector by trapping them in it, at the mercy of sponsors who know they have nowhere else to go. That creates the conditions for exploitation and a race to the bottom.
If we want care workers to stay, the answer is simple: treat them with dignity, improve working conditions, allow them to progress in their careers, move between employers and integrate into our communities.
And honour the five-year route to settlement they came here under.
We have an opportunity to do the right thing.
Firm but fair. Let’s not forget the fair bit.
The government wants to double the time it takes for most migrants to qualify for permanent residence from five to 10 years.
It comes after Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the 'unprecedented' number of people arriving in the UK demanded an answer from the government.
But are some of the Labour ministers against the proposal?

One of the problems Reform continue to face is those wishing to become its politicians are often reprobates and knuckle draggers. Not all of them, but a high proportion.

Extremism is becoming more common on both the left and right of British politics.
Mike and I have written to the EHRC to call out both in recent weeks.
We must be clear-eyed about the threat extremism poses to our democracy and root it out wherever it appears.
NEW: former home office minister @MikeTappTweets has written to the EHRC alongside Labour MP @MarkJSewards raising concerns about Reform UK’s internal safeguards after ITV’s Exposure documentary filmed Reform councillors expressing racist, sexist and Islamophobic views.
A Reform UK official has shared advice on how to pass party vetting by deleting social media posts supporting Tommy Robinson.
It's part of an undercover investigation inside Reform UK’s political operation that has found senior party officials saying they have to “defend the indefensible”, with Nigel Farage told he was “protecting” one Reform candidate from being sacked for allegedly racist views.
ITV Exposure gained unprecedented access to Reform’s Westminster headquarters, sending in an undercover reporter inside the party in January 2026, where she worked as a press officer. She secretly recorded conversations between Reform officials as they dealt with multiple accusations of racism by Reform councillors and candidates.
Reform UK told us: "Not all individuals covertly recorded by ITV are members of Reform UK. Where members, activists and councillors have clearly behaved inappropriately, investigations have commenced. In some cases, there have been suspensions and due process must be followed.
"Reform UK has improved and prioritised its vetting procedures, but from time to time, a handful of individuals who do not share our values will initially make it through vetting. This is the same for all organisations.
"There is no room for racism in Reform UK. We always respect due process of investigations and whilst these are ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment on individual cases."
