Please note that South Africa under Nelson Mandela did not permit trans women in female prisons, changing rooms, or female sports teams. (These are the things Rowling protests.) So I guess they did know the difference between men and women. And what "discrimination" meant was equal protection under the law and right to human dignity, which Rowling has never opposed, and in fact has gone on record supporting. The constitution also uses the phrase "*unfair* discrimination." Differentiating on behalf of protecting vulnerable people, like women and children, ensure fairness, or redress past inequalities, can be considered "fair." Nice try.
