Pat Murphy began his coaching career at DIII Maryville College.
After 6 years at the DIII level, he talked his way into the head coach job at Notre Dame, spending 7 years there before taking over at Arizona State, leading ASU to the college World Series 4 times in 15 years.
He then spent 5 years coaching in the minor leagues for the Padres before being named to the Brewers Major league staff, taking over as manager in 2024.
In his tenure as a big league manager, he’s twice (likely with a 3rd on the way) won manager of the year, became the first coach to lead a team to the CWS and MLB World Series, became the oldest manager to make his World Series debut and now is a World Series champion, bringing Milwaukee their first title.
What a journey for Pat Murphy

"The toughest to love you need to love the most."
The players who are hardest to coach often need you the most.
Don't lower the standard.
Don't avoid the tough conversations.
Don't give up on them.
Show them you care enough to hold them accountable.
Love hard to coach hard.

Learned, trained, drilled and competed… relentlessly. No matter the “feelings” they just did it anyway. I’ve been coaching my athletes this way for years. I’ve had the pleasure of having many many conversations w Murph about performance concepts and HOW to do it. It is SIMPLE but no one can make it easy. We’ve laughed at the word salad people and the hype shit that never works. Nothing more fun than watching these guys win the right way. No short cuts, just a standard that’s been built and maintained from the ground up.

"The standard creates the culture." @ChristianYelich
When coaches enforce it, it's a rule.
When players own it, it's a standard.
When everyone lives it, it's a culture.
Culture isn't built by what you preach.
It's built by what you practice.

It takes someone with the temperament of Pat Murphy to push back against an analytics trend that has overtaken MLB
That isn’t to say the Brewers don’t use analytics, they obviously do
But just because you have dozens of Ivy Leaguers on staff doesn’t mean they’re in charge
Pat has been divorced 3 times. He’s been described as a bully by former players, and criticized by NCAA investigators for his “cavalier” attitude
Agents of change are often very difficult people. But one part of success is adapting yourself to your circumstances.
The other part is finding circumstances that align with your strengths
