$SIVE something caught my eye in its patent portfolio: how it tackles alignment across wider laser arrays. A tiny rotation during assembly changes the gap between the lasers and the silicon photonics chip from one channel to the next. For scale: 0.1° across a 1 mm span creates roughly 1.75µm of gap variation. In US12523817B2, Sivers forms its alignment marks during BOTH the waveguide etch and the facet etch. The assembly process can then reference the waveguide and the actual light-output edge together. The patent specifically discusses keeping the gap consistent across wide arrays to reduce insertion loss. For multi-wavelength AI optics, the potential advantage is better coupling across the whole array. If that improves production yields, Sivers’ lasers could help customers lower the cost of each working optical engine. TLDR; $SIVE’s patented alignment method could provide a competitive advantage because it can deliver better assembly yields and lower integration costs than competing laser designs.
