Absolutely sums up what the Budget has done for Defence - clear that Welfare is the No 1 priority and not Warfare - but you can’t have the former without a credible military deterrence

If that really was a Budget to pave the way for an early general election, and voters choose to keep this Government in office, then I'm afraid the British people will deserve everything they get.

Can anyone please explain to me why the Chancellor paying £100 into my bank account to help me pay my energy bill - which I can easily afford and will be rising by far more than that sum anyway - is going to help the economy or deliver growth in every postcode? This is insane fiddling while the economy burns.

The wounded are being evacuated from Dnipro railway station to hospitals. My account on X appears to be throttled, so please share this. People need to see this blatant attack on civilians. I’m heading down there shortly.
Unbelievably sickening. I’m writing an article right now, having already warned about the dangerous escalation and direct targeting of railway stations and passenger trains. Explosions are still continuing now…. Now, 13 people have been killed in my city, civilians 🤬

Replying to @TorstenBell
Torsten, taking into account the technical pension changes still leaves a 0.4% cut in day to day running costs in 27/28. That’s on top of the department having to deal with the extra RDEL from your unfunded pay rises and NI hike consequences from contractors who pass the amount back, and the potential Chagos Island liabilities.

NEW: Russia is actively supporting Houthi operations to disrupt global energy markets by providing the Houthis with satellite imagery of Saudi oil and military infrastructure. Russian satellites have routinely been positioned above major Saudi energy and military sites in the days prior to and after Houthi attacks on those sites since July 2026. (1/2)

🚨While it is significant that the Chancellor has committed to increasing UK defence spending faster - don’t get too excited. The actual details on how the rise to 3% of GDP will be funded won’t be clear until the spending review at some point next year, which means more limbo, uncertainty and lost time. Also, promises of jam tomorrow will do little to relieve the considerable financial pressures on the military today. John Healey knows about that first hand - or at least his Army reservist son (with no bullets for training) does.   In fact, in the small print of the budget, in a column marked resources - so things like training - funding will be lower than previous estimates over the next two financial years. The Ministry of Defence says this is because of a technical adjustment to pension contributions across government so it doesn’t mean a drop in day-to-day spending. But, as mentioned above, that was already in a bad place. Yes the chancellor says he’s going to plug a £4.7bn hole in a major defence investment plan. Yet he’s not found extra money to enable the army to reverse a cost-saving decision to reduce training even as the new defence secretary warns the UK needs to be readying for war ⬇️ skynews-defence.noosphere.ap…

As suspected, day-to-day spending on defence is being CUT by 2% in cash terms in 2027/8. While capital defence spending is increasing by 18%. So less cash is going towards the things that will really deter Russia before 2030: personnel; munitions; command & control.
The Chancellor will announce greater investment in big, shiny capital defence projects in tomorrow’s budget - jets, ships, high tech assets - to be delivered in 2030 or beyond. While day-to-day spending on our current armed forces will continue to flatline. This is a serious problem that will leave Britain completely exposed in a real conflict with Russia before 2030. We need a strategy for a real war-time scenario. Not a shopping list. We must be prepared of THE war that is coming not just A war. A 🧵

CONCLUSION 🧵(1/2): Putin would have the world, and especially the United States, believe that he is somehow holding back from crushing Ukraine, but that he could do so at any moment of his choosing. The opposite is the case. If Putin had had a way of ending the war quickly, he surely would have used it. The effort to field an army large enough to make virtually no gains is costing Putin a fortune, driving up inflation in Russia, and generating increasing social discontent. Fielding a larger army would cost more with no guarantee of materially changing the situation on the front. That is why Putin is holding back at least for now. ⬇️ Putin has likely recognized the folly of trying to drown Ukraine in Russian blood and has instead opted to try to hammer Ukraine into submission with a strategic bombing campaign. The Russians have secured a temporary advantage in the skies over Ukraine through their jet-powered drones and the shortage of Patriot missiles that can intercept their ballistic missiles. But Ukraine is fielding solutions to defend against the jet-powered drones, and it is hardening and decentralizing its infrastructure to survive the ballistic missile strikes (as well as developing its own ballistic missile interceptors, although that effort will take time). The Russian strikes are currently devastating Ukrainian energy and other infrastructure and imposing a brutal cost on Ukrainian civilians—as Putin intends. But there is no reason to think that this strategic bombing campaign will be any more successful than every other strategic bombing campaign in history—all of which have failed to compel a country holding its own on the battlefield to surrender.
It is unclear whether Putin is lying about Russian gains or being lied to by his own military—or both. Russian military correspondents constantly complain of what they call “beautiful reports” that Russian military units send to higher headquarters, claiming gains they have not made. Ukrainian forces say that they have been able to use the Russian military’s own internal culture of lying to their advantage, luring Russian troops into traps because the Russians think that they are moving through territory they control. Leaked Russian military maps show phantom gains, often matching Putin’s claims. The pervasive lying within the Russian military is a problem for Russian soldiers, but likely an advantage for Putin, as it supports his own efforts to present Russian forces as advancing and winning when, in fact, they are doing neither.

It’s technical – but the easiest (for me) to grasp allegation is that Labour have bundled in 🕵️‍♂️ MI6, MI5 & GCHQ 🕵️‍♂️ budgets towards Nato GDP target, unfairly. @BenWallace70: “NATO's published definition defence expenditure makes no reference to intelligence agencies.”
