In this week's episode, Lane is away on leave, but we pick up his selection and chart Poe's development of the detective story in this different take on C. Auguste Dupin's modus operandi. Share and enjoy!

I saw him and Ian McKellen do โWaiting for Godotโ on Broadway years and years ago. I really hate that play, but they made it almost fun.

Will Gov. Whitmer opt Michigan into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit before Jan 1? If she doesnโt, Michigan families would miss out on scholarship opportunities, and the money would go to other states who have opted in, like Ohio and Indiana.
The program could help families cover educational expenses, such as tutoring, school supplies, transportation, uniforms, home wifi, and more.

Loved Waugh's novels and answered on him in my English Lit finals. Brideshead his classic, but agree with this writer about Decline and Fall. When reading it in the Union reading room was laughing so much someone asked me to leave!

The 2026 decade long restoration of the 1914 Louis Sullivan bank in Newark, Ohio was given a Palladio Award. It is fantastic. A neighboring building was purchased and physically rebuilt beyond the facade to enlarge the original bank building. hand stenciled gold leaf mosaics rebuilt where necessary. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY could write me such a nice welcome to @OnePeterFive , and speculate about the finer levels of the double eagle & the Habsburgs, like the inimitable @RCCoulombe

Hard to countenance how passionately vitriolic Waugh would have been today, to see how the enemies he satirised mid-century have so gradually and so insidiously triumphed.

Introduction to Local Gov't would be a great addition toany primary school curriculum!
Replying to @Prof_Cooper
We had Michigan state history in 4th grade, and I loved it. We didnโt have a city history unit, though, and I think that should come back. I do remember a field trip to the old Kalamazoo Gazette building (RIP), but there could have been more, maybe introduction to local govโt.
Happy Birthday to-day to Evelyn Waugh (1903โ1966), one of the finest novelists of the 20th century. Brideshead Revisited (and its brilliant TV adaptation) gets the lion's share of the glory nowadays, but I'm a sucker for Decline and Fall. Celebrate by reading one of his books!
Learning *is* magical! You find something out about the world and everything changes; and then, fifty years later, it's still there in your head, maybe unchanged, maybe amended, maybe rejected. You can dig it out and think about it again, even make it new again!

After forty years in front of the camera, Iโll be directing my first feature film, SO HELP ME GOD: a Civil War epic about a Union soldier named Albert Townsend, who should have received the Medal of Honor but didnโt.
Clerical error.
I learned of Albert through his descendantsโ archival research. What I found was more than an injustice waiting to be corrected. It was a story of friendship and extraordinary courage: an unassuming young man becoming a soldier who held his ground, and his principles, under fire.
Thatโs a story worth telling on the largest possible scale. And weโre inviting the people who want to see it told to help bring it to the screen, as investors in the film through Republic.
We intend to do it justice: real cannons, one hundred horses, and the cast in period-accurate uniforms. Weโve brought on Mark Huffam, whose work includes Saving Private Ryan, Game of Thrones, and The Martian, to produce it. He knows what it takes to make an epic, and how much depends on the human story at its heart.
At the Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I introduced the project alongside Civil War historian Brad Quinlin, members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and representatives of Civil War Roundtables. Weโre also supporting the campaign for Albertโs posthumous Medal of Honor. His descendants are still fighting to see his courage properly recognized.
This picture is about friendship, love, and honor โ and common people rising to accomplish extraordinary things. I want to give that story everything it deserves.
I hope you will lift the banner with us.

Tomorrow we're releasing a full UATX course for free: all 19 lectures of Professor Isabella Reinhardt's Rise and Fall of Ancient Rome, filmed in class with our students.
It runs from Rome's mythical founding to the Third Century Crisis. It ends on a question the class spent a whole session arguing about: did Rome ever really fall?
