The chances of getting work from Twitter connections are slim, but I could really use some right now. Copy editing, proofreading, manuscript review, instructional design.

I saw him and Ian McKellen do “Waiting for Godot” on Broadway years and years ago. I really hate that play, but they made it almost fun.

Will Gov. Whitmer opt Michigan into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit before Jan 1? If she doesn’t, Michigan families would miss out on scholarship opportunities, and the money would go to other states who have opted in, like Ohio and Indiana.
The program could help families cover educational expenses, such as tutoring, school supplies, transportation, uniforms, home wifi, and more.

Loved Waugh's novels and answered on him in my English Lit finals. Brideshead his classic, but agree with this writer about Decline and Fall. When reading it in the Union reading room was laughing so much someone asked me to leave!

The 2026 decade long restoration of the 1914 Louis Sullivan bank in Newark, Ohio was given a Palladio Award. It is fantastic. A neighboring building was purchased and physically rebuilt beyond the facade to enlarge the original bank building. hand stenciled gold leaf mosaics rebuilt where necessary. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY could write me such a nice welcome to @OnePeterFive , and speculate about the finer levels of the double eagle & the Habsburgs, like the inimitable @RCCoulombe
My welcome to Eduard von Habsburg as a contributing editor to OnePeteFive by showing what we all owe his family. onepeterfive.com/the-habsbur…

Hard to countenance how passionately vitriolic Waugh would have been today, to see how the enemies he satirised mid-century have so gradually and so insidiously triumphed.

In this week's episode, Lane is away on leave, but we pick up his selection and chart Poe's development of the detective story in this different take on C. Auguste Dupin's modus operandi. Share and enjoy!

After forty years in front of the camera, I’ll be directing my first feature film, SO HELP ME GOD: a Civil War epic about a Union soldier named Albert Townsend, who should have received the Medal of Honor but didn’t.
Clerical error.
I learned of Albert through his descendants’ archival research. What I found was more than an injustice waiting to be corrected. It was a story of friendship and extraordinary courage: an unassuming young man becoming a soldier who held his ground, and his principles, under fire.
That’s a story worth telling on the largest possible scale. And we’re inviting the people who want to see it told to help bring it to the screen, as investors in the film through Republic.
We intend to do it justice: real cannons, one hundred horses, and the cast in period-accurate uniforms. We’ve brought on Mark Huffam, whose work includes Saving Private Ryan, Game of Thrones, and The Martian, to produce it. He knows what it takes to make an epic, and how much depends on the human story at its heart.
At the Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I introduced the project alongside Civil War historian Brad Quinlin, members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and representatives of Civil War Roundtables. We’re also supporting the campaign for Albert’s posthumous Medal of Honor. His descendants are still fighting to see his courage properly recognized.
This picture is about friendship, love, and honor — and common people rising to accomplish extraordinary things. I want to give that story everything it deserves.
I hope you will lift the banner with us.

Tomorrow we're releasing a full UATX course for free: all 19 lectures of Professor Isabella Reinhardt's Rise and Fall of Ancient Rome, filmed in class with our students.
It runs from Rome's mythical founding to the Third Century Crisis. It ends on a question the class spent a whole session arguing about: did Rome ever really fall?

I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing.
Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed.
What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community.
At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades.
That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him.
My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

With all due respect, “personhood” is not a magical trump card that overrides the basic principles of the republican form of government. One cannot conclude from the bare fact of personhood that anyone and everyone has a right to be counted in the census, to vote, or to stand for office.
U.S. bishops are opposing proposed Census Bureau rule changes for the 2030 census, arguing that excluding noncitizens without lawful permanent resident status from the apportionment count would effectively deny them recognition as persons.

An example of this problem: Modern histories of the papacy (incl O'Brien, O'Malley, Duffy) assert John VIII was murdered in 882. The sole source for this is an annal in Fulda, Germany; no one in Italy spoke of it at the time. Only Coulombe hedges, noting details are conflicting.
