The Star Wars story accidentally contains the seeds of this transcendence btw. The galaxy is not saved when Luke conquers his hate and becomes a pacifist. The galaxy is saved when Vader turns his hate towards the Emperor and kills him out of love for his son.
Yes, Star Wars at its most mythopoetic would have transcended both the Jedi and the Sith. Luke would have gone through the Freudian integration of the id and superego by the ego, becoming the kind of man Nietzsche called a “Caesar with the soul of Christ.” This is what the final trilogy ought to have been. Unfortunately for us, no one (and especially not George Lucas) has any idea what that man would be like.

America was supposed to be Art Deco. The lobby of 450 Sutter Street, San Francisco, opened in 1929. We don't appreciate this architecture enough.

your regular reminder that while the modern man thinks of memorization as "rote" and "uncreative," the ancient Greeks literally considered memory to be the mother of all the muses
Memorization has an unfairly negative reputation. I recently spent a few hours memorizing the names of all the countries in the world and it's such a clear improvement in how well I can understand and reason about other topics. Memorization is scaffolding for more complex ideas

I've said this before: the majority of people who use AI (and I'm not talking about programmers or people who actually have to constantly run agentic tasks at desk or other truly token-hungry stuff like that, but just the typical person using ChatGPT as a replacement for Google) could simply download an open-source model, run it locally on their home PC, and get a perfectly acceptable result. Altman is mortally afraid of the average AI user figuring that out.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says it’s “quite terrible” that people have so much DRAM sitting in their own PCs instead of being used in data centers. “Everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer. And be used 5% of the time,” He argues that cloud data centers should make better use of limited memory supplies instead of people running AI models locally.

1975: “a lot of people want personal computers, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have microprocessors, we’re going to be able to run them in our homes, and so we’re not going to need all the stuff in the mainframe. but from a global allocation perspective, actually it’s quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of memory chips sitting on their own desk and being used five percent of the time. you want maximum utilisation on the time-sharing terminal. somehow many people’s intuition is the opposite of that”
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources “a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

hey sam, your mclaren is only used 5% of the time. this is a terrible allocation of scarce resources. have you considered taking the bus to work

Brain dead. No understanding of second order effects. "Let everyone do drugs." We tried that with marijuana. Now he wants to legalize even harder drugs. He should move back to California rather than jibber jabber from a red state he fled to.
I used to agree with Joe Rogan that people should be able to gamble, do drugs, whatever they want. Then I realized that free will is an illusion and addicts don’t know they’re addicts until they try it for the first time. Rogan’s reason for defending gambling is he used to hang out in a pool hall with gamblers, and if someone couldn’t handle it, then just stay away. The problem is these gambling ads are EVERYWHERE now, and the apps are constantly with you, sending you notifications to gamble just a little bit more. People are gambling their money away on sports and their life away on drugs, and Rogan’s answer is to let them do it.

Not a phrase, but the word, "utilize." I got so tired of seeing that word in memos, proposals, and evaluations that I started sending them all back with instructions to replace the word with "use." Remember: you *use* something for its original purpose. You *utilize* something for something other than its original purpose.
Phrases you'd ban? Ahead of his time. Not possible. Breaks the laws of physics. Time only goes one way.

I think this is the best thing I have read all year. On civilisation, and why it's a constant battle to hold it together.
This is very good from, IMO, the most interesting modern political philosopher Joseph Heath. josephheath.substack.com/p/r…

I'm reading Michael Douglas's new memoir, and it's genuinely one of the best I'd ever read, fantastic insight into how he made some of the greatest movies, but by far the best anecdote is when he at one point was shocked how he could produce films, be a father, be a husband, and act in films all at the same time. At which point when you turn the page, it reads: "Oh right. Now I remember. Cocaine." lol

Merkel destroyed German prosperity and led the sheep to slaughter from Chinese competition.
WTF happened to German prosperity? Every western neighbour is at least 2x richer. Even the French, who are busy with strikes and protests.

Guys, I beg you to start being the person you wish to be. This study found that just 5 minutes a day of imagining your best possible self, for two weeks, made people noticeably more optimistic about their future. Picture who you want to be, then go act like them today.

Many writing cultures are currently dying They had been a superpower, because writing forces understanding AI just makes it too easy I suspect companies that fight this and force their teams to write their own docs will do better in the long run

Recognizing slop is an insanely important skill, because the world has always been full of slop. For every great thing, there are 1,000 shallow mimics. For every great podcast, there are 1,000 slop casts. For every great blog post, there are 1,000 slop posts. For every great company, there are 1,000 slop companies.

AI has a funny way of deceiving people into thinking that they can do everything on their own. AI Vibe Coding? Imagine hiring an engineer who knows what they are doing instead who can vibe code. AI video editing? Imagine hiring an agentic editor who can now edit 10x more than before. Building an AI enabled brand? Imagine what a person who has built a brand can do in terms of damage. The only people getting the 10x use cases are people who were deep experts in their thing before AI. in short, hiring the cracked team member is still the unlock and will continue being the unlock
