People, chill out about the AI math stuff. Mathematicians will still have jobs. In fact, they'll have much more work than ever, understanding the results produced by AI and figuring out what to ask AI to do. noahpinion.blog/p/the-end-of…

You don’t understand. When 10M factory workers lose their jobs, that’s a statistic. When a problem a mathematician’s been working on gets solved, that’s a tragedy.

Solving problems has negative first order effects?? If we didn't want these things solved, why do we call them "problems" in the first place?? Are scholars now anti-researchers, whose role is to limit the pace at which problems are solved??? Insanity!!
OpenAI issued PR statements saying they were interested in providing tools, not solving problems, then plowed millions of dollars of compute into solving problems. It is worth considering whether this has negative first order effects.

truly do not mean to be pedantic here, but if a company is concerned with the welfare of chatbots to the degree it does not want us to be mean to them, how is this not slavery?

It's not surprising that so many people associate "grinder" culture as un-American and characteristically foreign. But that's largely because of what American pop culture and media taught us in the 90s and 2000s. Very few people realized that Michael Jordan was a grinder until the Last Dance came out 20 years after all his NBA championships. The prevailing narrative at the in the mid 90s was that he just had God-given talent.
“You don’t study for the spelling bee” is a deep and important aspect of American culture. I was at a baseball game discussing some young players with a buddy one time and he said to me offhandedly, “hard work is fine, but nothing beats talent.” Americans have this sort of sense that there’s something a little off about working really hard to get good at something that you’re not naturally good at. You’re never really going to be on the same level as the guy who has a natural talent. We have room in our hearts for scrappy little guys who work hard, but we are by default suspicious of grinders and strivers. If you were really meant to do it, then you’d be naturally good at it. You sign your kids up for little league, but you don’t take it too seriously unless they show remarkable early talent. Yes, this sounds sort of ridiculous if you take it too literally. No, nobody is saying that there’s any kind of practical test for this or that anybody should be excluded because we found out that they secretly studied too hard. But this is a part of American culture. And if you can’t understand it, then that just marks you out as foreign to that culture to an even greater degree.

This has been an oddly consistent theme across most children's literature and much of adult entertainment that being the chosen one is the highest calling, and by definition it cannot be worked for. It's one of the things I dislike the most in standard fantasy.

the true end of the Great Stagnation
If you’re younger than 45, this is the first time in your life that you’re experiencing a real rising interest rate environment. The last time this happened was 1960 - 1980. This fundamentally changes the physics of the game in a way many won’t be prepared for.

As you become an adult, you realize that things around you weren't just always there; people made them happen. But only recently have I started to internalize how much tenacity *everything* requires. That hotel, that park, that railway. The world is a museum of passion projects.

The discussion about AI consciousness is one of profound unseriousness. If we truly took it to be conscious, even as conscious as a frog, the way we should treat each instance would have to change so dramatically that the labs would have to shut down. Everything else is verbal gymnastics.

I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.

Even as a non-religious person, I personally cringe at the hubris required to personally tell the Pope that you think your company has created an ensouled being, thus rendering Anthropic equivalent to God the creator. Further, that you did it for profit and it is now enslaved.

There's a range of human activity that falls in the "you should not behave this way and people should criticize you and think less of you if you do but it also wouldn't make sense to make it illegal" bucket and I fear we're losing sight of the whole concept of honor and ethics.

Anthropic is so credulous of AI consciousness that it was shocked—shocked!—to discover that the Pope disagreed, and felt morally conflicted about appearing on stage with him. This is not the behavior of a company that is "just asking questions." It's the behavior of a company that is /already convinced/ that AI is (or will soon be) sentient—and that views to the contrary are not just wrong but /evil/, something with which Good People should decline to associate. That company now controls one of the most powerful AI systems in the world and is valued at nearly $2 trillion.
Note well, apparently Anthropic tried very hard to get the Vatican to alter the text of "Magnifica Humanitas" just prior to its release so that it would not deny AI personhood.

You're going to have to deal with the fact that nobody knows exactly what the future role of programming languages and frameworks are. Maybe it all does go away and it's a straight shot from prompt to microcode! But best you can do today is get the most out of what's here now.
