Tremendous progress has been made, and you love to see it.

Skip is the first representative of the general public who doesn't actually represent mainstream tobacco control.
The four previous holders of the position:
- Scout (no first name), an anti-tobacco LGBT activist.
- Pebbles Fagan, an anti-tobacco professor engaged in tobacco research (as members of the general public do).
- Sonia Duffy, an anti-tobacco nursing professor.
- Patricia Nez Henderson, an anti-tobacco Native American activist who wants to "decolonize tobacco" and feels unsafe being in the same room as the tobacco industry.

Great read on what counts as "legitimate" use of noncombusted nicotine products.
Does someone have to actively smoke before they are allowed to benefit?
Aligns well with my own thinking. Thanks @RogerBate3 for referencing my Substack on this: arielleselyaphd.substack.comā¦
1/4 Must adults first smoke cigarettes before their interest in nicotine becomes legitimate? My new CGHA paper argues for a regulated adult market beyond smoking substitution. Nicotine carries risks; adult choice still matters.

Two recent developments relating to nicotine pouches and tobacco harm reduction deserve attention.
On October 30, @FDATobacco authorized 24 Velo nicotine pouch products following rigorous scientific review. FDA reported lower levels of harmful constituents than in cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, including no measurable levels of several carcinogens associated with oral cancer.
fda.gov/tobacco-products/ctpā¦
Separately, a new scientific assessment of Velo products sold outside the U.S. concludes that the evidence supports health risks similar to or lower than Swedish snusāand substantially lower than cigarette smoking.
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4295ā¦
The comparison with snus is important. Snus has decades of epidemiological evidence showing substantially lower risks than smoking. Unlike snus, nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf, and growing evidence supports their potential to reduce harm when adults replace cigarettes completely.
Pouches don't yet have snusās long-term evidence base. But uncertainty about their precise long-term risks should not obscure the substantial difference in risk compared with continued smoking.
People who smoke deserve clear, proportionate information about their alternatives.
You might think that @ACSCAN would applaud the FDA's scientific consensus that authorizing a variety of non-combustible nicotine products can greatly reduce the massive cancer burden posed by cigarette smoking, especially among middle-aged adults and seniors.
But you'd be wrong.
Today, @FDATobacco authorized 11 new flavored nicotine pouches, continuing to compromise the fight against cancer and threatening to sustain youth nicotine use.
Chill, mint, and wintergreen are among the flavors.
Once again, the FDA is putting profits over public health.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Nicotine itself is not carcinogenic:
statnews.com/2025/09/10/nicā¦
FDA operates on a budget, and does not make a 'profit'.
FDA granted marketing approval after finding the tobacco-free pouches have lower levels of harmful and potentially harmful constituents.
In its latest reveal, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (@ACSCAN) continues to show zero interest in reducing the burden of smoking-related cancer and is now choosing to hide almost every reasonable objection put forth by those with lived experience.
At this point, you might think that @ACSCAN would have noticed a fivefold increase in views received by hidden replies compared to replies not hidden (seems bad for them) and perhaps reconsidered their priors, or at least the strategic value of continuing to hide replies?
Alas..

A great example of politicians with no clue about vaping. @JimfromOldham claims that shops primarily selling vapes are, apparently, "anti-social businesses". @AshOrgUK disagrees because they are not. Truth is, govt doesn't even understand the type of shops they should be tackling

I smoked for 24 years. I have now been smoke-free for 14 years.
I still use nicotine.
Those three sentences should be straightforward. Yet put them together in a conversation about public health and someone will inevitably suggest that I have merely exchanged one problem for another, as though removing burning tobacco from the equation were a minor administrative adjustment.
I have continued a dependence. I have stopped inhaling cigarette smoke. Both statements can be true, and the distinction between them is the point.
The nicotine confusion machine works by making that distinction disappear.

Today @FDA authorized 24 new flavored nicotine pouches. This brings the 5-year total to 89 new flavored tobacco products, continuing to allow for more marketing of addictive products that appeal to kids.
