The California State system is, I believe, the largest university system in the USA (by enrollment). Its systemwide academic senate has published a formal resolution stating the UC is approving courses as math that don't meet state standards. Specifically, data science courses 1/

As a fan of both physics and @chrischirp, this made me happy.
My mother captured the moment. But it was really lovely to win for that article. I feel so strongly about women in science. Casual words matter. evidence matters. And thank you to my brother, without whom I'd never have become a scientist. He showed me the beauty of it. Thx A x

And I have serious ethical concerns with the false marketing that's going on, beta testing such curricula which deviate from the CACCSSM on kids of color (Tuskeegee?) while marketing it as prep'ng them for STEM, then rewriting UC admissions policy to promote your own course. 4/

The Glastonbury crowd filling in for Lewis Capaldi when he needed help was such a beautiful moment. Anyone saying “it was heartbreaking” or “he shouldn’t have gone on” is seriously missing the point. Disability is not a bad thing to be hidden. It exists alongside success and joy.

A recent work from @iddo claimed GPT4 can score 100% on MIT's EECS curriculum with the right prompting. My friends and I were excited to read the analysis behind such a feat, but after digging deeper, what we found left us surprised and disappointed. dub.sh/gptsucksatmit 🧵

I weirdly enrolled in 2 PhD programs (1 math, 1 physics), with math deferred 1 year. Did 1 year each before settling on math. Me: I'm a physics PhD student. Random person: OMG that's so cool! I saw this show on physics thing X, and... Me: I'm a math PhD student. RP: I hate math.

Scenario: moving to new town. Child offered admission to a selective state school with severe Mediocre-fish-in-small-pond syndrome. Responds to all emails with [paraphrased] “we’re too selective to reply to parents, since plenty on waitlist would gladly take your child’s place.”

The school did have open houses earlier in the year, but those finished before academic job offers went out, so I couldn’t attend. After that, the school didn’t allow visits or conversations with prospective families. Fair enough. But surprised they also won’t speak post-offer.

ARGH. And again, the numbers are painting a clear and damning picture ... until politicians blunder in with clown shoes to kick up dust. (When ill people spend much more time in emergency depts, there will be many more deaths there, whether or not delays caused the deaths.)
Data provided by NHS trusts to @UKLabour shows a total of 23,316 people died in emergency departments last year - up from 19,122 in 2021 and 17,502 in 2019. @wesstreeting says "The Conservatives' failure over 13 years to properly staff or reform the NHS has a cost in lives."

🧵There have been suggestions from some politicians that the UK’s universities should reduce the number of international students they take as part of a strategy to reduce immigration. This viewpoint is very misguided & would significantly damage the UK’s universities & economy.

A well-evidenced article by @tomloveless99. Much of the public pushback against the California Math Framework has focused on high school, but Tom shows that there are major issues with elementary school recommendations as well, much of which cites flawed research from youcubed.
California’s New Math Framework Doesn’t Add Up: It would place Golden State 6th graders years behind the rest of the world—and could eventually skew education in the rest of the U.S., too. ednxt.co/3nZoNJM

Anytime you read an article that isn't behind a paywall, you can thank the "cynical" open access movement for fighting for the principle that everyone - not just people at wealthy academic institutions - should have access the results of scientific research.

We find that violent relationships have large and devasting consequences on women's economic independence. We hope this research further motivates policymakers to address the key role economic suppression plays in these relationships. To that end, please share widely! [2/3]
