In exquisite timing, local river guardians discovered two significant sewage discharges on the Roding today. The quantity & volume was so big that they were visibly polluting the river (& likely poisoning aquatic life) for hundreds of metres downstream. Even worse, this stretch of the River at Wanstead Park is one of the most popular natural swimming & paddling spots in East London that will be very busy during the heatwave this week. This deluge of sewage is putting people’s lives (particularly paddling children) at risk. Perhaps @thameswater could use some of the million pound bonus they gave out to stop the sewage & warn local people instead?
Replying to @thameswater
@thameswater recently told me that due to “fiscal constraints”, they can’t afford to fix all of the illegal outfalls on the River Roding by 2030 (already a more than fair deadline in the circumstances I feel). This single one million pound payment to their finance chief would, alone, be enough to stop a billion litres of raw sewage a year entering the river in Ilford. Which other companies do we allow to commit serious crimes because they’ve taken money that should have been used to ensure their company complies with the law & given it to their execs instead? How long until the government says “no more” to these chancers & puts Thames Water out of its misery? news.sky.com/story/thames-wa…

A new BMJ Analysis finds a UK-US trade deal could cost the NHS a potential £45bn in drug spending and nearly 300 000 excess deaths over 10 years. The deaths and adverse health outcomes will inevitably affect the poorest in society, writes @KamranAbbasi bmj.com/content/394/bmj-2026…

China planted forests are expanding their leaf area 66 percent faster than comparable natural woodlands. For almost five decades the country has pursued the Great Green Wall one of the largest reforestation efforts on Earth. This vast tree belt along the margins of the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts aims to combat desertification and stabilize the environment. A recent study using satellite data reveals that these planted areas exhibit distinct growth patterns compared to undisturbed forests. The managed plantations have shown leaf area increases approximately 66 percent quicker than nearby natural stands. Younger trees inherently grow more rapidly and human oversight contributes to this acceleration. After adjusting for age and site conditions the planted forests still outperformed natural ones by about 4.6 percent. Researchers suspect enhanced sensitivity to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels may play a role though the precise mechanisms require further investigation. These insights could refine models of forest carbon sequestration capacity. The advantage however is temporary. Growth benefits tend to peak when trees reach 30 to 40 years of age and then decline. While natural forests develop more gradually they sustain carbon storage over longer periods and harbor significantly higher biodiversity. Planting initiatives therefore offer valuable short term carbon capture but cannot substitute for the conservation of mature ecosystems. The Great Green Wall has raised regional forest cover from roughly 5 percent in 1978 to 14 percent in 2023. It has diminished dust storms and enhanced local air quality. The project continues to provide important data on forest responses to climate shifts and human intervention.

A single bird has just accomplished one of the most extraordinary feats in the animal kingdom — flying nearly one-third of the way around the Earth without stopping to eat, drink, or rest. The record-breaker is a five-month-old Bar-tailed Godwit that flew nonstop from Alaska to Tasmania, Australia. Covering 8,425 miles in just over 11 days, it set a new record for the longest nonstop flight ever documented in any bird. What makes this journey even more astonishing is that it was the young godwit’s very first migration. The entire route took place over the open Pacific Ocean, with no chance to land. Despite that, the bird navigated thousands of miles of featureless water with pinpoint accuracy. This incredible endurance is made possible by remarkable physiological adaptations. Before takeoff, the godwit packs on enormous fat reserves — nearly half its body weight — to fuel the flight. At the same time, many of its internal organs, including parts of the digestive system, temporarily shrink to lighten the load and maximize energy efficiency. Unlike many seabirds that depend heavily on gliding, this godwit flapped continuously for the entire journey, battling shifting winds and weather systems the whole way. Researchers at the Pūkōroro Auckland Shorebird Centre say discoveries like this are transforming our understanding of migratory birds. Their astonishing endurance, navigation skills, and energy management demonstrate biological capabilities that can match — and in some ways surpass — even the most advanced human engineering.

84-year old retired priest Sue Parfitt has been repeatedly arrested for breaking counter-terror law by holding signs to protest the proscription of Palestine Action. Today, she went further than ever before, vocally expressing support for the group, and encouraging the police arresting her to join her in that support. She was arrested under section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000, a criminal offence that carries a sentence of up to 14-years. She told Novara Media why she’ll continue to break the law.

THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM FOUNDER JUST GOT A TASTE OF HIS OWN SURVEILLANCE STATE Klaus Schwab spent half a century getting the richest, most powerful people on the planet into one room every January. Presidents. CEOs. Billionaires. All flown in to talk about trust, transparency and doing good for humanity. His team ran a routine security sweep at his private home in Geneva, just down the road from World Economic Forum (@wef) headquarters, and found a hidden listening device. He's 88. He's filed a criminal complaint with Swiss police against whoever put it there. Early checks say it had been sitting there for up to three years. Nobody knows who planted it. Nobody knows what they heard. The timing could not write itself better. Schwab quit as WEF chairman in April 2025 after an anonymous whistleblower letter accused him and his wife Hilde of spending forum money on themselves. We're talking hotel massages, business class flights, trips to Venice, reportedly well over a million dollars worth. Schwab's response was a lawsuit against the whistleblowers for defamation. A law firm called Homburger looked into it for months and cleared him in August 2025. Somewhere in Geneva there's a tiny microphone that got more honesty out of Klaus Schwab than any Davos panel managed in five decades. Sources @Bloomberg @WSJ @Reuters

🚨 Imho, not enough people are (yet) familiar with this photo of Nigel Farage with convicted criminal fraudster “Posh” George Cottrell (far-right) and corrupt convicted criminal Nathan Gill (centre), the former leader of Reform UK in Wales and a former Brexit Party MEP. On 22 July 2016 (just after the Brexit referendum), while attending the Republican National Convention (#NATCON) with Farage, Cottrell was arrested by IRS Criminal Investigation special agents at Chicago O'Hare International. Cottrell was federally indicted on 21 counts for conspiracy to commit money laundering, wire fraud, blackmail, and extortion. In 2014, he had met with undercover IRS federal agents in Las Vegas, where he conspired to launder millions of dollars' worth of drug money using offshore bank accounts. Reform UK are the first UK political party to accept crypto donations. Following a plea agreement in December 2016, prosecutors agreed to dismiss 20 counts in return for a guilty plea to a single count of wire fraud in which Cottrell admitted to explaining various ways criminal proceeds could be laundered. In March 2017, Cottrell was sentenced and released from prison, having served eight months. In February 2026, “anti-elite” Reform UK's privately educated multimillionaire Nigel Farage, Reform UK's privately educated multimillionaire Richard Tice, and Reform UK's privately educated multimillionaire treasurer, Nick Candy (who features in the #EpsteinFiles), along with Reform UK's privately educated London mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham, Reform UK's privately educated Old Etonian weirdo Policy Advisor James Orr, and GB “News” presenter and former Brexit Party MEP, Martin Daubney, all attended the launch of privately educated multimillionaire George Cottrell's book, 'How to Launder Money', at the luxury hotel Raffles on Whitehall. Other attendees included: Ed Sumner (Head of Communications for Reform UK and a former Welsh Conservative staffer with some past controversy over WhatsApp comments on diversity and immigration); Jack Anderton, a young anti-immigrant social media campaigner and adviser closely tied to Farage and Reform UK, known for running Farage’s TikTok and working on campaigns; Aaron Lobo, Director of Operations at Reform UK with a background as a producer at GB News and LBC; Charles Carlson, nephew of Tucker Carlson, who worked as a Reform UK press aide before moving to a role at Palantir where he now operates in UK government relations and tech circles with right-leaning ties. Among 'journalists' attending the book launch were: Glen Owen, Political Editor of the Mail on Sunday; Christian Calgie, Senior Political Correspondent (notably at the Daily Express, with moves toward Daily Mail roles); Mark Wallace, CEO of Total Politics Group (a politics media company owned by Lord Ashcroft) and former ConservativeHome CEO; Samuel Armstrong, 'Legislative Affairs Director' at Toby Young's highly partisan Free Speech Union, and; Mike Graham, podcaster and disgraced former commentator on TalkTV and GB News. In 2020, when asked about his relationship with Cottrel, Farage described him as “like a son to me”. In November 2025, Gill was jailed for 10.5 years after pleading guilty to bribery charges after accepting over £40,000 from an operative linked to Russian secret services in exchange for pro-Russian speeches and TV interviews. Anyone who still believes this bunch have working class people's interests at heart is a fool.
