.@caseyvchan, Chemistry/Biology Interface (CBI) fellow at Sarafan ChEM-H, on learning that plants produce different compounds at each developmental stage.
@Sattely_lab

ALT What is the coolest piece of science you’ve learned about in 2024? “I’ve really enjoyed learning about the correlation of compound synthesis and developmental stages in plants. For example, Niraj Mehta in Dr. Elizabeth Sattely’s lab found that daffodils charge newly developed leaf tissue with toxic alkaloids to improve plant defenses. This work lays the groundwork for toxin production discovery in other plants.”

Excited to share our new preprint on the Taxol pathway!
We developed a strategy to systematically activate and identify gene sets in non-model organisms and used it to find 8 new genes in the Taxol pathway, allowing us to biosynthesize Taxol precursors de novo.
Surprisingly, this required a new protein (FoTO1) that helps the first Taxol P450 oxidase produce the correct product. more here: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… congrats to coauthors

Dr. Beth Sattely @Sattely_lab elegantly presents the difficulties and bottlenecks in plant specialized metabolism pathway discovery and approaches we can use to mine and find fascinating non-canonical enzyme classes 🪴🧬🔍✨️
Zinc deficiency is the most abundant microdeficiency of plants globally. It affects up to 50% of all arable lands. We show that Brassicaceae plants (broccoli, radish) actively secrete peptides to increase root mass under zinc starvation. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Who's that newly polished PhD candidate? 🥳Congrats to @TLowensohn70203 passing her quals
There is something truly mesmerizing about a drop of water hanging from a plant 💚 Happy Friday everyone!
Get ready for the 2nd-year grad students Tara Lowensohn and Ryan Kong: Both just received the prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship! 🥳 new.nsf.gov/funding/opportun…
