Defiance of federal laws by individuals en masse (even at the state level) has been and remains an inherently American tradition. From time to time, Americans are inclined to obstruct, resist, or otherwise tell authority figures to fuck off. Both the federal prohibitions on alcohol (at one time enshrined as a Constitutional Amendment) and cannabis faced increasingly brazen public opposition. A broad swath of the population fought those prohibitions, eroding political and eventually legislative support exactly through the sort of everyday disdain for unthinking adherence and blind obedience he now expects of his neighbors. The cannabis argument is still in the transitional period before the public definitively wins, but the final outcome appears inevitable. There are other examples where the public may have won or were eventually swayed the other way or where the underlying disagreement remains unsettled. But to suggest that the fight itself is somehow uncharacteristic of who we are is to fundamentally misunderstand the American spirit. Sheridan's take is incongruous with several of his characters who nembody this model of American defiance in the face of laws that they cannot abide. Even if he personally disagrees about a how a segment of the populace reacts to the implementation of a particular policy, he should vaguely if not fundamentally understand them.
