To have two books coming out in two months - different publishers, different formats, different genres (fiction vs nonfiction) - does seem a bit mad and greedy, but fun too

'A breathtaking conspectus of the 21st century, an exciting rags-to-riches adventure and a deeply moving story of male friendship ... I don’t know how @StarrittAlex is going to top this one' @FT Read the full review of #DraytonandMackenzie: shorturl.at/BBpIT

Copyright law is not complicated at all. If you want to use an author's work you need to ask for permission. If you use it without permission you're breaking the law. It's so simple. It'll be incredibly difficult for us, and for other affected industries, to take on Meta, but we'll have a good go! (Btw if you don't really care, that's ok, you don't need to tell me. Use that energy to fight for things you do care about) ❤️❤️

Fantastic article
‘Freudians read chess as an arena of Oedipal urges – the protection of the king denotes a fear of castration, the queen’s freedom on the board indicates her dominance and sexual power.’ A Diary by Nicholas Pearson: lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v47/n03/…

I am houred that @RUSI_org is drawing attention to my idea that may move the needle away from perpetual conflict in the Middle East. As I teach my students re the formation of the European Coal and Steel Community, leadership and the alignment of interests can change the world.

A few days ago Lawrence Hollom posted a preprint that solves a problem about posets informally known as the fishbone conjecture, which I am told was extremely central in the area. 🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2411.16844

Just learnt a proverb used by the Jale (tribe in New Guinea isolated from foreign influences until 1961): "People whose face is known should not be eaten."

Try not to stampede but I've just set myself up in the heavens, so to speak. I may even post something there soon. All I'll say is that I am not a social media innovator. So if I'm doing it...

Did you cover Rex Whistler? I've always enjoyed the portraits he included of her on book jackets, eg her book on Bath
Replying to @ahistoryinart
Back in the day, I wrote my thesis on portraits of Edith Sitwell. Most who portrayed her were dead by then, but I managed to interview Feliks Topolski who held court under the Waterloo arches, and gave me a huge broadsheet that folded out into a drawing of her.
