As the prophecy foretold
“I don’t care if he’s the Chair of the Defence Select Committee” A churlish and ill-tempered outing from Wes Streeting at the Despatch Box as he undermines Tan Dhesi and the Labour-chaired Defence Select Committee that holds the Defence Secretary to account. This is entirely the wrong tone to adopt.

The irony is here, of course, is that Andy Burnham can tackle all these issues in this parliament if he wanted to do so - through spending restraint in other areas. What he can’t do, if he wants to be faithful to 24’ election winning manifesto, is raise VAT, income tax, or national insurance. The only reason he would ‘need’ to call an election would be to win a mandate to raise the big three taxes.
Very obvious what Andy Burnham's tactic will be now. He'll pop up next year and say "I didn't want to have to call an early election. But these issues - defence, welfare reform, social care - are too big to put off any longer. I need a mandate to tackle them".

Bridget, telling lies is a breach of the Ministerial Code. It's well known from your time as Education Secretary (before your demotion!) that you struggle with the truth. As the then junior minister responsible for financial services regulation, I was not even remotely a 'co-author' of the mini budget. I did not see it until the night before. I’m flattered that my decades of real-world business experience outside Westminster trigger so many Labour MPs. It’ll be useful when the next Conservative government has to clean up your mess! (P.S. Mortgage rates are higher now than in 2022…)
Badenoch’s right-hand man is in denial over the damage he did as co-author of Truss's mortgage-spiralling mini-Budget. The Tories still haven’t apologised. They'd do it all over again. Labour is giving people breathing space on the cost of living and fresh hope for the future.

Today in @UKHouseofLords I highlighted that US tech hyper scalers are investing $697 billion in compute for #AI in 2026, what does the government think it’s (welcomed) £600m+ of spending in the #Budget across numerous AI initiatives will get us, and especially UK AI SMEs?

Business groups are sharply criticising John Healey’s budget “This budget lacks the bold moves that would have made it easier for firms to invest, hire and grow,” CBI boss Rain Newton-Smith says “There is nothing concrete to provide breathing space for the vast majority of businesses who are already dealing with energy bills a third higher than their European counterparts.” The budget had “nothing to ease sky-high energy bills and nothing to make hiring someone more affordable,” the Federation of Small Businesses says. The British Chambers of Commerce says Healey’s package lacks “the big calls that would really shift the economic dial” and that “many firms will have been hoping for a greater impact.” Make UK says the budget “failed to address any of the fundamental costs holding back investment and growth in manufacturing.” Via @Joe_Mayes @JacobReid02 @sabahmeddings: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Two explanations: A. Labour Party before country - early election inbound. B. The Chancellor really hasn’t got what it takes to make a tough decision. Neither are good.

We Conservatives set John Healey five simple Budget tests. He has failed them all. The Chancellor hasn't even funded 3% defence spending by 2030. The very issue he resigned over! Healey has kicked the can down the road, and failed to take the tough decisions Britain needs.

BREAKING: after Healey’s Budget today, MoD spending will be £1bn per year lower than in the Defence Investment Plan he resigned over👇
Big row potentially brewing on defence… Tories alleging that Healey - the man of principle who quit over DIP - might actually be *cutting* defence spending In the next two financial years, the budget for the MOD will be £1bn a year less than Rachel Reeves planned when the DIP was published in June. The total departmental spending can be calculated from the Budget Red Book pages 145-147. When compared to the DIP settlement, the Tories claim it shows that Labour are cutting £1bn a year from the MOD budget for the next two years. Why? It appears that they are forecast to spend less than expected on pensions. Rather than the MOD being allowed to reuse this Resource Department Expenditure Limit, the Treasury has kept it Cartlidge: “This is a complete dereliction of duty from the Chancellor”

Takeaways from the budget: Household disposable income down - £400 or 0.8% Debt up on predictions by around 10% for the next few years No clarity on cutting costs. No building resilience. No preparation for the winter to come. And @KemiBadenoch nailed the response.

Is that it? John Healey had a big job to do cleaning up Labour’s mess. This Budget fails to do it. Britain is overspent, overborrowed and overtaxed. This Budget does not come close to meeting the moment. My full response👇

Here's the real story of this Budget, the can being kicked down the road. This Labour government is apparently planning spending cuts on most areas of public service spending of 2.6% per year between 2028-29 and 2031-32. Pull the other one. It's got bells on.
