🇪🇷 A first for #Eritrea! A team of young Eritrean innovators has been selected for the @Y4Cofficial Call for Solutions 2026 with their bio-wall system — one of 50 projects selected from 2,677 proposals across 121 countries. With @UNDP's support, the team will implement their project over the next two years and present it at the #Youth4Climate programme in Italy this month. Congratulations to the team! 🇪🇷 #ClimateAction

#Eritrea's creativity was on full display this #UNDay: bold ideas in the Innovation Corridor, waste reimagined through our Trashion Show, and young people showing what is possible. Innovation starts with real needs and grows when people have space to shape solutions. More soon.

Income tells us something about poverty. It does not tell us enough. Poverty is multidimensional and is measured by whether a clinic can refrigerate a vaccine, whether a child can study after dark, and whether a harvest survives a tough season. Measured that way, progress looks different, too. It looks like 100,000 people across 57 communities with reliable power. Like 124 schools with light to study by. Like 485 women who chose their own livelihoods and built them. To commemorate #EndPoverty Day, we joined the Ministry of Agriculture and partners because measuring poverty properly is the first step to ending it. Let Us End Poverty Together. #Eritrea

⚡100,000 people with reliable power. 💡124 schools with light for studying. 485 women who chose their own livelihoods and built them. Over 1,200 farmers in Rora Habab who cut 163,000 meters of terraces into a hillside so the rain would stay in the soil. This is what poverty reduction looks like when it is led nationally and built by the people who live it. "When programs are designed so that women lead rather than simply benefit, the results speak for themselves." — Dr @PaLaminBeyai, Resident Representative, @UNDP #Eritrea Yesterday, we were pleased to join the Ministry of Agriculture, the @UNinEritrea Resident Coordinator, and partners to mark the #InternationalDayfortheEradicationofPoverty. #EndPoverty
World Food Day and International Day for Eradication of Poverty Observed World Food Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty were observed at the national level today at Mai-Nefhi under the respective themes “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow” and “Together Let’s Eradicate Poverty”. At the event, attended by senior Government officials, representatives of UN institutions, religious leaders and invited guests, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of small, productive farm plots in ensuring an adequate supply of nutritious food. He said that, drawing on accumulated experience, efforts are being made to fully implement the Ministry of Agriculture’s strategic programs through continuous evaluation and assessment. Mr. Tekleab Misgina, Director General of Regulatory Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, underlined that the food system built today will influence the overall development of future generations. He said that the Government of Eritrea has been making substantial investments in water and soil conservation, agricultural research, livestock resource development and agricultural extension infrastructure. Mr. Tekleab also said that the number of water reservoirs has increased from 130 in the early years of independence to 850, reflecting the substantial efforts being made. In their messages at the event, representatives of FAO and UNDP said that sustainable development is based on investment in strong national institutions, coordinated planning, society and agricultural infrastructure. They added that development partnerships have a greater chance of success when aligned with national priorities, plans, institutions and responsibilities. #Eritrea

From a genetic collection of 14 varieties to 50,000 offshoots for farmers, a crop built for heat and salt is taking root on the Red Sea coast. New nurseries are supplying quality planting material, solar power is cutting irrigation costs, and in Menkaka, some palms are already yielding 30–40kg of dates each. 🔗Learn more: go.undp.org/NeY Powered by a partnership with @FAO @IFAD and the Ministry of Agriculture

When we talk about the #PactForTheFuture, the real test is how its commitments translate into meaningful action—action that young people can understand, shape and help deliver. Today, I joined young leaders from across Africa for a regional session on the Gen Z Pact for the Future, an important effort to bring the Pact closer to young people and connect its commitments on peace, climate, technology, sustainable development and youth participation to the realities of their countries and communities. Global commitments only become meaningful when people can engage with them. This means ensuring young people have the information, space and tools to influence implementation, hold institutions accountable and help shape the solutions that will define their future. The Pact is about the future—but young people must be partners in delivering it today.

🌱 Meet the Eritrean Young Innovators Behind "GEDENANA" Through the UNDP Eritrea Youth Connect for Development Initiative, a team of passionate young Eritrean innovators is working intensively to finalize their prototype innovation, the Farmers Digital Assistant System, "GEDENANA." Driven by a vision to empower farmers through technology, the team has developed a smart digital solution that provides timely, practical, and localized agricultural information. GEDENANA bridges the gap between traditional farming practices and modern innovation, helping farmers make informed decisions, even in remote and connectivity-challenged areas. Their journey highlights the power of youth-led innovation in addressing local challenges and developing solutions that contribute to sustainable development, climate resilience, and food security. #YouthConnect #UNDPEritrea #YouthInnovation #DigitalAgriculture #GEDENANA #InnovationForDevelopment #ClimateResilience #FoodSecurity #YouthLeadership #SDGs
